Ingredients

Caramelized Simple Syrup

  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup water

Pumpkin Spice Sugar

  • 2 teaspoons packed brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice

Old Fashioned

  • Ice
  • 1/4 cup bourbon whiskey
  • 1 tablespoon (1/2 oz) Caramelized Simple Syrup (see above)
  • 3 to 4 drops Angostura™ aromatic bitters
  • 1 orange twist

Steps

  • 1
To make Caramelized Simple Syrup, in 1-quart saucepan, place 1/4 cup brown sugar and 1 tablespoon of the water over medium heat. Cook, without stirring, 1 to 3 minutes or until sugar caramelizes. Carefully add remaining water; heat to boiling over high heat. Cook 30 to 60 seconds or until sugar dissolves. Transfer to heatproof storage container; cover and refrigerate until cold, at least 1 hour.
  • 2
To make Pumpkin Spice Sugar, in small bowl, mix 2 teaspoons brown sugar and the pumpkin pie spice.
  • 3
To make Old Fashioned, place the pumpkin spice sugar on a small plate. Wet the rim of a 10-oz old-fashioned glass. Dip the rim of the glass into the spice mixture. Fill glass with ice. Add bourbon, caramelized simple syrup and bitters; stir. Garnish with orange twist.

Tips from the Betty Crocker Kitchens

  • tip 1
For an apple version, use apple pie spice instead of pumpkin pie spice, and garnish with a fresh apple slice.
  • tip 2
For pretty orange twist, use a bartender’s zester or “channel knife” to remove the peel from the orange.
  • tip 3
This Pumpkin Spice Old Fashioned recipe makes enough pumpkin spice sugar and caramelized simple syrup for 4 servings. The remaining pumpkin spice sugar can be kept for up to a week, covered and stored at room temperature. The remaining caramelized simple syrup can be kept for up to three days if refrigerated.
