1/3
cup packed brown sugar
2
teaspoons whole allspice
4
sticks cinnamon (3 inch)
1
bottle (48 oz) apple cider (6 cups)
1
bottle (48 oz) cranberry juice cocktail (6 cups)
  • 1 In 4- to 5-quart slow cooker, mix all ingredients.
  • 2 Cover; cook on Low heat setting 4 to 6 hours. Before serving, remove allspice and cinnamon.

Expert Tips

Put the spices in a paper coffee filter and tie it with a piece of kitchen string to make the spices easy to remove from the hot cider.

Fresh orange slices add a pretty touch of color to this ruby-red hot drink. Add them to the cider in the slow cooker just before serving.

Made this for Thanksgiving, and everybody loved it. My husband even asked me to have some on hand for when he gets home late on cold winter evenings. Plus, it fills the house with a delicious smell all day!

In 1972 as a new bride, I received a Betty Crocker Cookbook. This recipe was in the book. Each and everytime I made it, I took home an empty crock. The original differed a bit, which I still prefer. Try the original one: Omit Cranberry (or not - original did not have it) One large orange One bottle of orange juice (no pulp) Instead of placing the allspice into the coffee filter, rather punch small holes into the orange and place them into the holes. Make the drink as directed and place the orange in the cider to 'slow cook'. It absorbs the flavor of the orange and the orange juice is great flavor. I have also sliced oranges and placed into the pot. Because the OJ isn't clear like the cider and/or cranberry, it is a bit cloudy, but good just the same!!!!
