  • PREP TIME 15 Min
  • TOTAL TIME 30 Min
  • SERVINGS 16

2
cups Gold Medal® all-purpose flour
2
teaspoons baking powder
1/2
teaspoon salt
1/2
cup shortening
2/3
cup shredded Cheddar cheese
1/2
cup finely chopped salami, bologna or fully cooked ham
3/4
cup milk
Ketchup, mustard or cheese dip, if desired
  • 1 Heat oven to 450ºF. Mix flour, baking powder and salt in medium bowl. Cut in shortening, using pastry blender or crisscrossing 2 knives, until mixture is crumbly. Stir in cheese and salami. Stir in just enough milk until a soft dough forms.
  • 2 Turn dough onto lightly floured surface. Knead gently 10 times. Place on ungreased cookie sheet. Pat dough into 8-inch square; cut square in half. Cut each half crosswise into 1-inch strips. (For crisper sticks, arrange strips to have about 1-inch space between them.)
  • 3 Bake 12 to 15 minutes or until golden brown. Serve warm or cool with ketchup, mustard or cheese dip.

This is actually a great base recipe. So that it wouldn't be so bland, I added a dash of garlic powder and parsley to the dough. Use butter-flavored shortening instead of regular. I also pureed leftover bologna in my food processor rather than taking the time to chop it up. Kids love to 'see' the cheese, so I mixed the pureed meat and shredded sharp cheddar cheese (for more flavor) together. I rolled out the dough in taco-sized tortilla shape. Then scooped up my meat and cheese mix by the spoonfuls, rolled them into a log shape with my hand, placed them on the rolled out dough and wrapped them up. Makes for a better definition of taste between dough and meat/cheese. Only cook for 10-12 minutes. Everything in the mix is already processed, or only needs a few minutes to rise. They are better soft than crunchy to picky kids!

These are so easy and good. The best part is you can use any meat or cheese. My 7 year old actually requested these instead of cake for her birthday party at school. My 17 year old said they remind him of the cheddar rolls from Red Lobster.

These were very disappointing. Bland taste and did not taste quite right by themselves or with ketchup. Not worth your effort.
