  • 1 Heat oven to 350°F (325°F for dark or nonstick pans). Grease and lightly flour bottom and side of 9-inch round cake pan, or spray with baking spray with flour. Place paper baking cup in each of 12 regular-size muffin cups.
  • 2 Make cake batter as directed on box. Pour half of batter in round pan; spoon remaining batter into muffin cups. Bake as directed on box. Cool completely, about 1 hour.

Frost 7 cupcakes with blue frosting, 4 cupcakes with pink frosting and 1 cupcake with yellow frosting. Place 1 blue cupcake on center of white frosted cake. Place remaining blue cupcakes, sides touching, in circle around center cupcake. Place 2 rows of 2 pink cupcakes on top center of blue cupcakes. Place yellow cupcake on top center. Sprinkle with candy sprinkles. Store loosely covered.

Expert Tips

You can freeze the unfrosted cake and cupcakes (tightly covered) for up to 2 months.

If you have only one pan and a recipe calls for more cupcakes than your pan will make, cover and refrigerate the rest of the batter while baking the first batch. Cool the pan about 15 minutes, then bake the rest of the batter, adding 1 to 2 minutes to the bake time.

I made this cake for my daughter's birthday. I used an 8 inch round pan instead of the 9 inch round and it worked out fine. I put the cake on a dinner plate and decorated it there, it worked out wonderfully! There was even space to put princess figurines in the space between the cupcakes on the bottom level. I couldn't find confetti sprinkles, so I used sugar sprinkles instead. It turned out great and I received many compliments!

This recipe has been a real big help to me during family parties. All I do the night before is make the cupcakes, no frosting, and the bottom cake, no frosting. The next morning before the party I ice the cupcakes, and cake, and stack them into a beautiful, edible piece of artwork. Thankyou Betty Crocker for making my family gatherings less of a hassle.
