Recipe Ingredients

Cake Mix: Betty Crocker™ Super Moist™ Butter Recipe Yellow Cake Mix is the base that makes these muffins soft, tender, and full of buttery flavor.

Sour Cream: Adds tang and moisture, keeping the muffins soft for days.

Vanilla Extract: Brings warmth and enhances the overall flavor.

Nutmeg: The key spice that gives Dirt Bombs their classic bakery taste.

Eggs: Provide structure and richness for perfectly domed muffins.

Butter: Melted butter is brushed on the muffin tops to help the cinnamon sugar stick and add a rich, indulgent finish.

Cinnamon: Combined with sugar, it makes the sweet-spiced topping that defines Dirt Bombs.

How to Make Dirt Bombs

1. Mix the Batter

Start with the cake mix, sugar, sour cream, oil, vanilla, nutmeg, and eggs. Stir until well combined for a thick, creamy batter.

2. Bake the Muffins

Divide batter evenly into muffin cups and bake until golden and a toothpick comes out clean. Cooling for 10 minutes in the pan helps them set.

3. Add the Topping

Brush or dip the cooled muffin tops with melted butter, then coat in cinnamon sugar for the signature Dirt Bombs look and flavor.

How to Store Dirt Bombs

Room Temperature

Keep in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.

Refrigerator

Store in the fridge for up to 5 days—warm slightly before serving for best taste.

Freezer

Wrap muffins tightly in foil or freezer bags and freeze up to 2 months. Thaw at room temperature or reheat in the microwave for 10 to 20 seconds on high for a quick treat.

Dirt Bomb Variations

Spice It Up: Swap nutmeg for pumpkin pie spice or add a pinch of cardamom for a new flavor twist.

Mini Dirt Bombs: Use a mini muffin tin for bite-sized versions, perfect for parties or kids’ snacks.

Filled Muffins: Add a spoonful of jam or Nutella in the center of each muffin for a surprise filling.

Glazed Finish: Skip the cinnamon sugar and drizzle the muffins with a simple vanilla glaze instead.
