Ingredients

Steps

  •
    1
Heat oven to 350°F (325°F for dark or nonstick pan). Spray bottoms only of two 13x9-inch pans with baking spray with flour. Make and bake cake mixes as directed on boxes for 13x9-inch pans. Cool 10 minutes; remove from pans to cooling racks. Cool completely, about 1 hour. Place cooled cakes on work surface. Place templates over cakes as shown. (See link below for diagram and templates.)
  •
    2
Cut cake around templates. (Discard cake pieces cut from around templates, or save for another use.) Arrange cake pieces on tray as shown. Freeze 1 hour for easier frosting.
  •
    3
Tint 1 tub frosting light brown, using brown and yellow gels. Spread frosting over entire cake to seal in crumbs, using extra frosting to attach nose, ears and legs on cake.
  •
    4
Tint 1/2 tub frosting dark brown, using brown and yellow gels. Using decorating bag fitted with grass tip, pipe ears. Tint remaining frosting in tub light brown, using brown and yellow gels. Frost head, using grass tip. Create definition near eyebrows by applying additional frosting with grass tip.
  •
    5
Pipe remainder of dog body, using remaining light brown frosting and grass tip. Place chocolate-covered candies on face for eyes and nose. Cut licorice in 8 thin strips, and place on feet to define paws. Cut fruit snack for collar and tag, and place at neck. Pipe writing gel to make dog's initial on tag. Store loosely covered at room temperature.

Tips from the Betty Crocker Kitchens

  • tip 1
Don't worry if your puppy pieces don't exactly end up to be the right size or shape! Once you assemble and frost, it will look doggone darling!
  • tip 2
Swap in Betty Crocker™ Rich & Creamy Vanilla Frosting for Betty Crocker™ Rich & Creamy Creamy White Frosting.
  • tip 3
Using disposable plastic decorating bags instead of canvas decorating bags makes cleanup a snap! Disposable decorating bags and piping tips can be purchased in the baking section of most craft stores.
  • tip 4
An easy way to fill your decorating bag is to place it in a glass measuring cup or large pint glass and fold the opening down around the glass so it is like a collar, then fill with frosting. Remove the bag and brings ends together; twist and squeeze frosting toward tip and pipe!
  • tip 5
To create the different shades of brown we've used in this recipe, squeeze small amounts of brown and yellow gel food colors into the frosting, then stir to blend. You can always add more food color to get the desired shade, but it's easier to start out using less and adding more as needed.
