Recipe Ingredients

This delicious Mud Pie recipe comes together easily with the below ingredients.

Granulated Sugar: Provides sweetness and contributes to the pie's texture. It helps to create a tender crumb and balances the bitterness of the cocoa.

Butter (melted): Adds richness, flavor, and moisture to the pie. The melted state ensures it mixes evenly with the other ingredients, creating a smooth batter.

Gold Medal™ All Purpose Flour: Provides structure to the pie, binding the ingredients together.

Baking Cocoa: Gives the pie its signature chocolate flavor. The amount of cocoa determines the intensity of the chocolate taste.

Vanilla: Enhances the other flavors in the pie, adding a subtle warmth and complexity.

Large Eggs: Binds the ingredients, add richness, and contributes to the pie's structure. They also help to create a moist and tender texture.

Hot Fudge Sauce or Topping: Adds a layer of intense chocolate flavor and moisture to the pie. It seeps into the holes poked in the pie, creating a gooey, decadent texture.

Heavy Whipping Cream: Forms the base of the whipped cream topping, adding richness and a light, airy texture.

Additional Ingredients You’ll Need: Salt, powdered sugar, chopped nuts (optional).

How to Make Mud Pie

Here are the basic steps to make Mud Pie. See full recipe below for all the details.

1. Prepare

Grease the bottom and sides of your pan to prevent the pie from sticking.

2. Make the Pie Base

Mix granulated sugar, melted butter, flour, cocoa, vanilla, salt, and eggs until smooth. Pour the mixture into the prepared pan, spreading it evenly.

3. Bake

Bake for 25 to 30 minutes. Don't overbake as this can result in a dry pie.

4. Add Fudge

Remove from oven and immediately poke holes while the pie is still warm to help the fudge sauce penetrate the pie. Carefully spread 1/4 cup of hot fudge sauce over the top, allowing it to seep into the holes.

5. Cool

Cool the pie completely to allow the fudge to set and the flavors to meld together (about an hour).

6. Make Whipped Cream

Beat heavy whipping cream and powdered sugar with an electric mixer on high speed until stiff peaks form. Tip: using a chilled bowl and beaters helps the cream whip up faster and hold its shape better.

7. Assemble

Spread the whipped cream evenly over the fudge layer, drizzle with additional fudge, and garnish with nuts.

How to Store Mud Pie

To properly store Mud Pie and maintain its quality, follow these guidelines.

Refrigerator

Mud Pie should always be stored in the refrigerator. Cover the pie tightly with plastic wrap or aluminum foil. It will keep 2 to 3 days.

Freezing (Not Recommended)

Freezing Mud Pie is generally not recommended because the whipped cream topping can change texture and become watery upon thawing. The pie's overall texture may also be affected.
