What Are Swedish Meatballs?

It starts with meatballs that are made with both beef and pork, panko breadcrumbs and savory seasonings. But what sets Swedish meatballs apart is the unique seasoned sour cream gravy. Our one-pot Swedish Meatballs makes everything in one skillet, to help cut down on the dishes!

How Should I Serve Swedish Meatballs?

You’re going to love the gravy so much; you won’t want to miss a single drop! Serve the meatballs and gravy over cooked egg noodles, rice, or even mashed potatoes.

Ingredients

Meatballs

  • 1 lb ground beef (at least 80% lean)
  • 1/2 lb ground pork
  • 3/4 cup Progresso™ Plain Panko Crispy Bread Crumbs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh parsley
  • 1 teapoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped (1/2 cup)
  • 1 egg

Gravy

  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/4 cup Gold Medal™ All-Purpose Flour*
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon pepper
  • 2 cups water
  • 3/4 cup sour cream
Make With
Gold Medal Flour

Steps

  • 1
In large bowl, mix meatball ingredients until well blended. Shape into 24 meatballs (about 1 3/4-inch each). In 12-inch skillet, cook meatballs over medium heat 8 to 10 minutes or until browned. Remove meatballs from skillet to heatproof plate; cover to keep warm. Drain fat from skillet, leaving browned bits in pan.
  • 2
In same skillet, melt butter over medium heat. With whisk, stir in flour, paprika, salt and pepper until bubbly. Slowly add water, stirring constantly over medium heat until mixture boils and thickens.
  • 3
Add meatballs to gravy. Cook over medium-low heat 8 to 10 minutes or until meatballs are thoroughly cooked. Stir in sour cream until blended.

Tips from the Betty Crocker Kitchens

  • tip 1
Prepare as directed--except substitute 1 package (24 oz) frozen meatballs or turkey meatballs for the meatballs. Heat as directed on package. Continue as directed in step 2.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does “until browned” for the meatballs mean the interiors are brown?

For our one-pot Swedish meatballs, we mean only until the surface is completely brown because the meatballs will continue to cook in the sauce.

Why is my gravy lumpy?

Be sure to use a whisk to stir in the flour and seasonings. Add the water slowly, stirring with the whisk to help the flour mixture to mix smoothly into the water.
