What Are Hot Cocoa Brownies?

It’s our supreme fudge brownie mix prepared as directed on the box. Our rich and creamy vanilla frosting is cleverly mixed with hot cocoa mix, to make hot cocoa frosting. The brownies are then topped with marshmallow bits and mini chocolate chips, for a decadent treat that’s easy enough to whip up anytime.

What Can I Serve with Hot Cocoa Brownies?

You can put these decadent treats over the top by serving a delicious drink to go with it. We think the match made in heaven is...dare we say it…a cup of hot cocoa! Of course, a glass of chocolate or regular milk would also be a great choice.

Ingredients

Steps

  • 1
Heat oven to 350°F (325°F for dark or nonstick pan). Spray bottom of 9-inch square pan with cooking spray. Make brownie batter as directed on box; spread in pan.
  • 2
Top with fudge pouch as directed on box. Bake 28 to 33 minutes or until toothpick inserted 2 inches from side of pan comes out almost clean. Cool completely, about 1 hour 30 minutes.
  • 3
In small bowl, stir hot cocoa mix and hot water until hot cocoa is dissolved. Stir in frosting until well mixed.
  • 4
Spread frosting evenly over brownies in pan. Top with marshmallow bits and chocolate chips. Cut into 4 rows by 3 rows. Store covered in refrigerator.

Tips from the Betty Crocker Kitchens

  • tip 1
Sprinkle 2 teaspoons Betty Crocker™ Peppermint Flavored Sugar over hot cocoa mix brownies for added flavor and crunch.
  • tip 2
Use very hot water to stir into the cocoa mix, to be sure it will fully dissolve. A mini whisk will help break up any lumps in the hot cocoa mix quickly.
  • tip 3
Refrigerate hot chocolate brownies 15 minutes after frosting for easier cutting. Clean knife after each cut.
  • tip 4
Be sure to use regular hot chocolate mix, as light hot cocoa or nondairy hot cocoa powder will adversely affect the flavor of the frosting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make this frosting for brownies in a 13x9 pan?

Yes! Simply double the hot cocoa mix and water and use the entire can of frosting. Double the marshmallow bits and chocolate chips that go on top.

Why is my frosting not smooth?

Some hot cocoa mixes are harder than others to dissolve. Be sure your water is very hot. Use only regular hot cocoa mix—not one with marshmallows. Mash out all of the lumps from the mix by using a small whisk or the back of a fork before adding the frosting.
