Recipe Ingredients

Here are the ingredients that come together to create our adorable Double-Heart Sugar Cookies.

Sugar Cookie Mix: This is our secret to easy sugar cookies! It provides the perfect base for consistently delicious and tender cutout cookies.

Flour: Essential for achieving the right dough consistency, the flour helps create sturdy yet tender heart-shaped cookies that hold their shape beautifully when baked.

Butter: Adds rich flavor and helps create that melt-in-your-mouth texture we all love in a good sugar cookie. It also contributes to the cookies' golden-brown edges.

Egg: The egg acts as a binder, holding all the ingredients together and adding moisture, ensuring your homemade sugar cookies are perfectly structured and not crumbly.

Powdered Sugar: The star of our sweet glaze! It dissolves smoothly to create a beautiful, opaque coating that sets nicely on your Valentine cookies.

Water: Thins the powdered sugar to the perfect consistency for dipping, allowing for a smooth and even glaze on your decorated sugar cookies.

Light Corn Syrup: This ingredient gives our glaze a lovely shine and helps it set without becoming too brittle.

Almond Extract: Adds a delicate, fragrant flavor to the glaze that perfectly complements the sweetness of the cookies.

Other Ingredients You’ll Need: Food color, sugar sprinkles or decors

How to Make Double-Heart Sugar Cookies

Here are some key tips to make sure your Double-Heart Sugar Cookies are a success. See the recipe below for full recipe details.

1. Don't Over-Flour When Rolling

When rolling out the dough, use just enough flour on your surface and rolling pin to prevent sticking. Too much extra flour can make your cookies tough and dry.

2. Roll Dough Evenly

Aim for a consistent 1/8-inch thickness across the entire dough. This ensures all your cookies bake evenly.

3. Do Not Overbake

Sugar cookies can go from perfectly baked to overdone very quickly. Watch them closely and remove them from the oven as soon as the edges are lightly golden. They will continue to set as they cool on the cookie sheet.

4. Cool Completely Before Glazing

This is perhaps the most critical step for decorating! If your cookies are even slightly warm, the glaze will melt, run, and won't set properly. Patience here pays off.

How to Store Double-Heart Sugar Cookies

Here's how to store your delicious Double-Heart Sugar Cookies.

Room Temperature

Store the cookies in an airtight container. If you need to stack them, place a piece of parchment paper or wax paper between layers to prevent them from sticking together or the glaze from getting damaged. The cookies will stay fresh for up to 4 days.

Freezer

Place the decorated cookies in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Put the baking sheet in the freezer for about 30-60 minutes, or until the cookies are firm. Once firm, transfer the cookies to an airtight freezer-safe container or a heavy-duty freezer bag. The cookies can be stored in the freezer for up to 3 months.

    2

Prepare the cookie mix according to the package directions for Cutout Cookies using the flour, butter, and egg.

  • Step
    3

Divide the dough in half. On lightly floured surface, roll each half of the dough to 1/8-inch thickness. With 3-inch and 1 1/2-inch heart-shaped cookie cutters, cut 12 cutouts of each size. Place 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheets.

  • Step
    6

Dip the top of each cooled cookie into the glaze, letting excess drip back into the bowl.

  • Step
    7

Place a small heart cookie on top of each large heart cookie. Top with sprinkles. Let stand at room temperature until set, about 1 hour.
