Heat oven to 350°F (325°F for dark or nonstick pans). In large bowl, beat cake mix, butter, 1 tablespoon milk, vanilla and egg with electric mixer on medium speed until smooth, or mix with spoon. Mix in additional 1 tablespoon milk if dough is too dry. Stir in nuts and chocolate chips.
  • 2
Drop dough by slightly less than tablespoonfuls 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheets.
  • 3
Bake cookies 10 to 12 minutes or until edges are set (centers will be soft and cookies will be very light in color). Cool 1 minute; remove from cookie sheets to cooling rack. Store covered.

Expert Tips

  • Baking times vary depending on oven and cookie size so watch these cookies closely as they bake. Take them out just before they look done and let them sit for a minute before transferring them to a cooling rack.
  • We love using chopped walnuts or pecans for the nuts, but you can use whatever nuts you have available. Don’t limit yourself to only using chocolate chips! Try using other kinds of sweet chips such as butterscotch chips or white vanilla chips to mix things up and create different flavors in your cookies.
  • These cookies are perfect for making easy and delicious ice cream sandwiches! Just bake the cookies as directed and let cool completely before scooping about 1/3 cup of vanilla ice cream into the center of two cookies. Press together and enjoy immediately or wrap in plastic wrap and freeze for later.
  • For a delicious twist on this easy cake mix cookie recipe, add peanut butter to the dough! Here is our recipe for easy homemade chocolate chip and peanut butter cookies.
