  • PREP TIME 10 Min
  • TOTAL TIME 25 Min
  • SERVINGS 5

1/2
lb extra-lean (at least 90%) ground beef
1
can (15 to 16 oz) great northern beans, drained, rinsed
1/4
cup finely crushed saltine crackers (about 7 squares)
2
tablespoons barbecue sauce
1/4
teaspoon pepper
1
egg
Leaf lettuce, if desired
5
whole-grain hamburger buns, split
5
teaspoons barbecue sauce
Sliced tomato and sliced onion, if desired
  • 1 Heat gas or charcoal grill. In large bowl, mix beef, beans, cracker crumbs, 2 tablespoons barbecue sauce, the pepper and egg. Shape into 5 patties, about 1/2 inch thick.
  • 2 Brush grill rack with vegetable oil. Place patties on grill. Cover grill; cook over medium heat 5 minutes. Turn; cook covered 5 to 6 minutes longer or until meat thermometer inserted in center of patties reads 160ºF.
  • 3 Place lettuce and patties on bottom halves of buns. Spread each patty with 1 teaspoon barbecue sauce. Top with tomato and onion. Cover with bun tops.

Expert Tips

Mixing ground beef with beans is a great way to enjoy the taste of beef and boost your fiber.

Offer up a platter of these tasty burgers at your next backyard barbecue. Add 1/2 cup of potato salad and carrot and celery sticks with fat-free dip for 4 Carbohydrate Choices.

Try using other kinds of beans, such as black, kidney or pinto, instead of the great northern beans.

Yes, we realize altering the recipe bumps it out of the "Heart Healthy" category, but it doesn't make sense to use a pound of beans and only 1/2 pound of meat. Definitely use the whole pound of ground meat--make it turkey if you want--and double the cracker crumbs (or use bread crumbs). My kids don't care for BBQ sauce, so I used one tablespoon worcestershire sauce instead. This recipe is FANTASTIC IF you use a whole pound of the meat.

I mashed the beans to try and hide them from my boyfriend, I thought that was a mistake but reading the other reviews it doesn't sound like unmashed is much better! The mashed beans made the texture very, very mushy, so I ended up dumping in the other 1/2 lb of beef and some extra cracker crumbs. I formed 7 patties. They were still pretty gooey, although they didn't crumble too badly. I would try them again, if I can figure out what else to tweak to get a better consistency, because the bean+beef flavor mix was very good. And the consistency, cooked, was fine.

Way too many beans, made the texture too mushy. Like eating refried bean patties. I think Boca Burgers are better but my kids ate them & say they would eat them again. I probably wouldn't without altering the recipe. Next time, I'll use a full pound 93% lean hamburger with 1 can of beans. I made these on the George Foreman instead of the outdoor grill and they cooked much better on it. I couldn't even imagine trying to cook these on the outdoor grill. I don't see how I'd have ended up with anything other than a mess. I do like the idea of the beans added though, so I will be altering and trying again.
