The Classic Tried and True with a Dash of Something New

Created November 3, 2022
Tried, True and Something New, Lattice Apple Pie and mini apple pies
Everyone has their tried-and-true recipes. They’re the dishes that are untouched. The ones that will be passed down for years and years to come. You take pride in these delicious classics and not even the amount of salt added has changed from great grandma’s recipe (if it has, that’s your secret).

We can just picture what this recipe card or the page in your old cookbook looks like. Cursive handwriting, spills and a tear or two. It’s a memento, a feeling and it’s something you can share with your little ones for years and years to come. We aren’t touching that; we wouldn’t dare to.

Something New

But… that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for some next-generation recipes at the table. Now, we know what you’re thinking, but don’t worry they aren’t replacing the old! Think of them as either an extra menu item or something new to try! Tip: when hosting your gathering, make sure you let all family members know that these are just happy additions to the traditional Turkey Day spread. And don’t forget to bring the kids into the kitchen! They’ll love being part of the “making of” and let’s face it, there are plenty of jobs for everyone.

Pass the Bread

Offering a Second Option?

Black Pepper ‘n Parmesan Grissini

We promise no one is going to be upset about more bread! Especially when it’s Black Pepper ‘n Parmesan Grissini. They can even be part of your appetizer round! Have the kids pass them out on a festive platter or in a basket. Not only is it a delicious snack (or side) but it’s also a cute way to get the kids involved and everyone will love visiting with them!

Who Brought the Veggies?

Wanna Mix it Up?

Honey-Balsamic Glazed Roasted Beets & Carrots

How about Honey-Balsamic Glazed Roasted Beets and Carrots? Just the colors and plating itself will be a crowd-pleaser. It will surprise your guests without making them feel like they’re missing out on the more traditional carrot dish. Let the kids in on the surprise early on so they feel extra special!

A Must-Have Side

Spicing It Up, but Also Having the Classic Option?

Rye Panzanella Salad with Brussels Sprouts, Pastrami and Dijon Vinaigrette

How about a Winter Rye Panzanella Salad? This is the perfect addition to your traditional stuffing. There are plenty of steps to get your kids involved and you can make both dishes side-by-side to see the similarities and differences. Who knows, you may have found a keeper!

More Potatoes, Please

Making Two Versions?

 Mini Caramelized Onion Potato Cakes

An old and a new? Consider adding Mini Caramelized Onion Potato Cakes. They are the perfect (almost) bite-sized potato side to add to your top-notch Turkey Day menu. Have your little ones sprinkle the garnish on top right before you serve.

The Main Event — The Turkey

Trying Something New?

Whole turkey on a platter

Is a Southern Style Deep Fried Turkey your jam? If so, we’ve got just the thing for you. It has a Cajun twist that will leave your guests wondering where this recipe has been all their life. While it’s cooking, tell your kids all the different ways you’ve prepared the Thanksgiving Day bird in the past. Take notes with them on what was great and what could have made it even better.

Don’t Forget the Dessert

Desserts Galore!

Easy Apple Pie Cookie Cups

We’ve never heard someone say, “that was the Thanksgiving with too many sweets.” So, why not celebrate fall’s favorite fruit by making an Easy Apple Pie Cookie Cup? The kids will love that there is a cookie option and grandpa will be so happy that he gets to indulge in his traditional apple pie. It’s truly a win-win.

Sticking to the classics is important but we also want to empower all Bettys to try something new. We’d love to see and hear about what you're serving up this Thanksgiving. Snap a pic and share your story. And don’t forget to tag us on social using @BettyCrocker.
