  • 1
    Heat oven to 375°F.
  • 2
In large bowl, stir cookie mix, flour, melted butter, egg and cinnamon until soft dough forms.
  • 3
On floured surface, roll dough 1/4 inch thick. Cut with 3-inch star-shaped cookie cutter; place cutouts 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheets.
  • 4
Bake 7 to 9 minutes or until edges are light golden brown. Cool 1 minute; remove from cookie sheets to cooling rack. Cool completely, about 20 minutes.
  • 5
Spread generous 1/2 teaspoon frosting on each cookie; sprinkle crushed candies over tops of cookies. Let stand about 30 minutes or until frosting is set. Store covered in airtight container at room temperature with waxed paper between layers.

Expert Tips

  • To make quick work of decorating, drizzle your cookies with frosting. Start by microwaving 1/2 cup frosting uncovered on High 10 to 15 seconds or until frosting is thin enough to drizzle. Then, dip a fork in the frosting and drizzle over the cookies using a sweeping back-and-forth motion, which comes from your wrist. Sprinkle drizzled cookies with crushed candies. Then, let stand until set—about 2 hours.
  • To easily crush your cinnamon candies, place inside small resealable freezer bag, and use a rolling pin or meat mallet to crush until fine.
  • For best results, bake one sheet of cookies at a time on the middle oven rack.
  • Dip cookie cutters in flour before cutting. This will make it easier to cut out shapes. To make your work easier, cut shapes as close together as possible. This also helps ensure your cookies are as tender as possible, since every time you reroll your dough scraps, the dough gets a little tougher.
  • If you really want your stars to sparkle, sprinkle on sparkling sugar as a finishing touch.
