Replace vanilla bean paste with vanilla extract teaspoon for teaspoon as a general rule. Some pastes will give different directions. Vanilla bean paste eliminates the work of scraping out the insides of the vanilla bean and gives you all those lovely little vanilla bean specks along with pure vanilla flavor. Avoid the imitation vanilla versions as they tend to have a weaker, often tinny aftertaste. Splurge for the real stuff.
