  • PREP TIME 30 Min
  • TOTAL TIME 2 Hr 25 Min

1
box Betty Crocker® SuperMoist® chocolate fudge cake mix
1/2
cup butter or margarine, softened
1/2
cup plus 1/3 cup evaporated milk
35
caramels, unwrapped
1
cup miniature candy-coated milk chocolate candies
  • 1 Heat oven to 350°F (325°F for dark or nonstick pan). Grease 13x9-inch pan, or spray with baking spray with flour.
  • 2 In large bowl, mix cake mix, butter and 1/2 cup of the evaporated milk with spoon until well blended. Using a piece of plastic food wrap, press half of dough (about 1 1/4 cups), in pan; remove wrap. Bake 12 minutes.
  • 3 Meanwhile, in 1-quart saucepan, heat caramels with remaining 1/3 cup evaporated milk over low heat, stirring occasionally, until melted.
  • 4 Remove partially baked crust from oven. Sprinkle 1/2 cup of the candies evenly over crust. Drizzle with caramel mixture to within 1/2 inch of the pan sides. Drop remaining batter by rounded teaspoonfuls over caramel mixture. Sprinkle with remaining 1/2 cup candies; press in lightly with spoon.
  • 5 Bake 20 to 24 minutes longer or until center is set and looks dry and puffy. Cool 10 minutes. Run knife around sides of pan to loosen edges of bars. Cool completely, about 1 1/2 hours. Cut into 8 rows by 4 rows. Store covered.

We used margarine for greasing the pan - it worked great. The only other thing we adapted was to use a mixer to mix the batter. I thought the spoon was not blending well enough. The bars were very good, but VERY rich! Next time I make these, I am going to used pecans instead of M&Ms. This way they would be more like a turtle bar. I think that would help offset the richness of the chocolate and caramel.

DO NOT and i repeat DO NOT BUTTER THE PAN WITH SHORTENING as it says. it makes the bars taste awful on the bottom. we took a fork and ate off the top and it was delicious! can't wait 2 make it again with regular Pam (cooking spray)
