Make your own classic cocktail wieners at home.
Classic cocktail wieners in a sweet and spicy sauce are one of my favorite potluck and party foods. I always make sure I make a batch of them if no one is planning to make them. Parties and get-togethers just aren’t the same without those smoky little sausages that have been simmered in that wonderfully flavorful sauce.
The basic recipe for cocktail wieners is super simple. For years I used to think it was just doctored up barbecue sauce, but whenever I made my own cocktail wieners at home, they were never quite as good as others I had tried. Then a friend told me I had been leaving out the secret ingredient, a sweet jam or jelly in my sauce.
The basic recipe for the sauce you simmer your little smoked sausage wieners in is a combination of sweet jelly or jam, a barbecue or chili sauce and an optional additional flavor like a spicy mustard. For this recipe, I added chipotle chili peppers and raspberry jam to barbecue sauce to make a super flavorful sauce that was slightly sweet with a little heat.
This recipe is just 4 ingredients and so easy to make. Just combine everything in a small saucepan and bring to a boil over medium heat. Then just simmer your cocktail wieners for about 20 minutes over low heat, or until they plump up.
You can also make this recipe in your slow cooker. Just combine all the ingredients in the slow cooker and turn it to low for 2 hours.
For another variation of this recipe, you can use grape jelly in place of raspberry jam and spicy mustard in place of the chipotle sauce. On holidays, you can also use canned cranberry jelly combined with chili sauce for a spicy tangy version.
