Expert Tips

  • To soften butter before adding it to your mix, cut in small pieces and leave at room temperature. A faster method is to microwave butter in 5-second intervals, turning the butter frequently so butter is softened but not melted.
  • Wait for the cookie bars to cool completely before slicing into pieces so your lines are sharp, and your pieces are less crumbly.
  • Customize this recipe for your next holiday gathering by substituting colorful baking chips or holiday-themed M&Ms for either the butterscotch chips or the white vanilla chips.
  • Substitute chopped nuts such as walnuts or toasted pecans for one of the baking chips for a nutty twist on this delicious recipe.
