I am fortunate (and grateful) to have wonderful people in my life who help me out when I need it or am in a bind. To show my appreciation, I like to give them little gifts. It doesn’t have to be something expensive or hard to make. It is the thought that counts. And people love to receive homemade gifts!
My Caramel Apple Dip is something I make frequently. People love it and always ask for the recipe. I add the dip to a basket with different varieties of apples—thoughtful and easy gift to give. This sauce is great for dipping apples but is also delicious over ice cream.
Caramel sauce is not hard to make, but there are a few rules. For starters, you need to have all of your ingredients ready before you put the pan on the stove. When the sugar begins to boil, it takes very little time to get to the desired color. You do need to babysit this, but it is only for a few minutes.
The second rule is that you can stir the sugar and water before it is on the heat, but as soon as it is over the heat, you cannot stir! You can swirl the pan, but stirring will cause the sugar to crystallize.
Set out all of the ingredients and have them ready.
Add the butter, heavy cream, sour cream and sea salt. Whisk until smooth. It will bubble and spatter. Keep whisking…it will come together.
