Slow cooker on, family happy. It's a beautiful thing! Our Slow-Cooker Family-Favorite Chili is everything you could want in a meal. Delicious? Of course! Enough for eight people? Check! Easy? Oh, yeah. We're talking set-it-and-forget-it, easy. Our slow-cooker family chili is amazing on its own but elevated with the fresh and flavorful go-to chili toppings you know and love, it's irresistible. We're adding every topping under the sun to our bowl (or should we say bowls) of Slow-Cooker Family-Favorite Chili. That's just how we roll!

slow cooker family favorite chili

Have a larger slow cooker? Double this up for a crowd and set out dishes of shredded pepper Jack cheese, broken yellow & blue corn tortilla chips and a big bowl of pico de gallo (a quick, fresh salsa of tomato, white onion, fresh jalapeno, cilantro leaves and lime juice) to spoon into each bowl.

Switch up the ground beef with some ground pork, chicken or turkey in this Slow-Cooker Family-Favorite Chili.

Not all chili powders are equal—the most basic consistent blend is made up of ground mild red chiles, garlic, oregano and cumin. But if you’re more adventurous, look for a smoky chipotle chili blend that has more kick, or stir in a pinch of ground cinnamon or allspice for a newer, more modern edge.

Inspired by the sapphire birthstone, this triple chocolate fudge cake dazzles with rich flavor and a celestial purple-blue design. Accented with edible gold pearls and hints of a starry night, it's a decadent showstopper perfect for September celebrations or anyone who loves a touch of magic with their chocolate.

sapphire inspired chocolate cake

Sapphire-Inspired Chocolate Cake with decadent chocolate layers, celestial blue-purple buttercream, and gold pearl accents—a stunning September showstopper.

Always use room temperature unsalted butter and make sure to sift your powdered sugar to ensure your buttercream is not grainy. Finish by mixing on low speed at the end to get rid of air bubbles.

What is the trick to buttercream frosting?

Bake the cakes at 350°F for 35 to 40 minutes. A toothpick inserted into the center of the cake should come out clean when the cake is done. In addition, the top of the cake should spring back when lightly touched in the center. Oven times may vary slightly, so start checking for doneness at 35 minutes.

How do I know when the cake is fully baked?

The different colors are used to create the sapphire-inspired celestial look. The blue buttercream forms the base, while the purple adds ruffled accents. White buttercream is used for clouds and optional moon details.

What’s the purpose of the different buttercream frosting colors?

Tweezers make adding the edible gold pearls simple and helps you place them exactly where you want them without disturbing the frosting.

What's the best way to add the edible gold pearls to the cake?

Love butterscotch? This easy Butterscotch Pudding Layer Cake starts with Betty Crocker™ Super Moist™ Yellow Cake Mix and gets rich flavor from butterscotch pudding, melted butter, and milk. Layered with homemade butterscotch-dark chocolate buttercream frosting, then finished with crushed pretzels, caramel, and sea salt, this sweet-and-salty dessert is a showstopping cake for parties and special occasions.

butterscotch pudding layer cake

Easy Butterscotch Pudding Layer Cake made with Betty Crocker™ yellow cake mix, caramel, and sea salt—a sweet-salty dessert everyone loves.

To soften butter, cut in small pieces, and leave at room temperature. A faster method is to microwave butter in 5-second increments at 50% (Medium) power, turning butter frequently, so butter is softened but not melted.

An easy way to crush pretzels is to place them in a resealable food-storage plastic bag; seal the bag, and crush with a rolling pin.

A turntable is helpful when decorating a cake. You can build your cake on the flat surface, and it allows you to turn the cake as you frost, which makes it easier to decorate.

To keep your serving plate clean while frosting the cake, place strips of waxed paper around the edge of the plate. Remove after frosting is complete.

An easy way to put crushed pretzels on side of cake is to hold the plated cake over a small bowl of crushed pretzels. Cup your hand, and press pretzels on bottom of cake, using the bowl to catch extras. Keep using what is in the bowl as you press the pretzels all around the edge.

Here are the ingredients you’ll need to make this Butterscotch Pudding Layer Cake.Yellow Cake Mix: It’s the easy base of the cake and gives it classic yellow cake flavor.Butterscotch Pudding Mix: One of the most important ingredients, it adds the signature butterscotch cake flavor, making it rich and moist.Butter: This adds rich, buttery flavor to the cake, and softened butter is the base that makes the buttercream creamy and spreadable.Butterscotch and Dark Chocolate Chips: These give the frosting rich, layered flavor, balancing sweet butterscotch with deeper chocolate notes.Pretzels: Crushed pretzels add crunch and help create the sweet-and-salty contrast that makes this layer cake stand out.Caramel Sauce and Coarse Sea Salt: These finish the cake with extra sweet-and-salty flavor.Other Ingredients You’ll Need: Eggs, vanilla, milk, and powdered sugar.

Ingredients

Here are the simple steps to successfully make this layer cake.
1. Prepare and Bake Cake Layers
Spray the bottoms and sides of cake pans, and line them with parchment paper for easier release. Beat the cake mix, milk, melted butter, eggs, and butterscotch pudding mix for 2 minutes, scraping the bowl occasionally. Then, divide the batter evenly in the pans, so the layers bake uniformly. Bake until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
2. Cool Cake Layers and Frost
Cool the cakes in the pans for 10 minutes, then remove to cooling racks and cool completely, about 1 hour. This is important so the frosting does not melt or slide. When making the frosting, let the melted chips cool for 10 minutes to help keep the buttercream smooth instead of greasy or runny. Assemble by frosting each layer, the top, and sides. Then, press crushed pretzels around the bottom edge.
3. Chill and Top
Refrigerate the cake uncovered for at least 1 hour. Right before serving, pour caramel sauce over the top so some drips down the sides, then sprinkle with sea salt.

How to Make Butterscotch Pudding Layer Cake

We recommend the following for storing leftover layer cake.
Refrigerator
You can cover and refrigerate any leftover Butterscotch Pudding Layer Cake for up to 5 days. Note, pretzels will soften the longer the cake is stored.
Freezer
Wrap portions of layer cake in a double layer of plastic wrap (or a layer of plastic wrap and foil). Freeze for up to 1 month. Thaw portions of cake still wrapped to keep them moist and enjoy at room temperature for the best texture. Pretzels will become softer, less crunchy during freezing.
