Tips from the Betty Crocker Kitchens

  • tip 1
Salsa comes from the Spanish word for “sauce.” Some salsas are fresh and others are cooked. Chiles give them that characteristic kick.
  • tip 2
Pico de gallo is another name often used for uncooked salsa.
  • tip 3
Look for large, juicy tomatoes for this easy salsa recipe—they'll feel heavy for their size. Store your tomatoes at room temperature for the best flavor and texture. Refrigeration makes tomatoes mushy and will cause them to quickly lose flavor! Finally, if a recipe calls for one cup of chopped tomato, that equates to about one large tomato.
  • tip 4
Make this Homemade Tomato Salsa crowd-worthy and extra hearty by adding 1 can (15 oz.) black beans, drained and rinsed.
  • tip 5
To seed a tomato, cut the tomato crosswise in half and squeeze each half gently over a bowl to remove the seeds.
