EXPERT TIPS

Expert Tips

Barley is loaded with fiber—the soluble kind that helps to lower blood cholesterol. If you're trying to add more fiber to your diet start slowly so your body can get used to it.

Try a can of seasoned diced tomatoes which includes Italian herbs or roasted garlic, for an additional boost of flavor.

This hearty stew pairs beautifully with any mixed greens and crusty whole-grain rolls.

VERY Good but I did make the following changes: - all chicken broth; although next time I will add another cup or so because there wasn't enough liquid...I know "stews" are thicker but I just prefer it more soupy - 1 cup barley - Diced tomatoes with green chilies instead of plain (we like spicy at my house) - I also cubed and cooked 3 chicken breasts in some minced garlic, ground black pepper and onion before throwing it all into the crock pot towards the end with the thyme and parsely so that the chicken wasn't dry

This came out really good! I used baby carrots and frozen peas for veggies since that's what I had. I would use half an onion next time since there was a lot of it. It was very flavorful and everyone loved it!

Nasty!!! A waste of time. I spent more than the 15 minutes prep time to cut my veggies, skin, and wash my chicken. I went by the recipe with the exception of subing one cup of water with an additional cup of chicken broth and using sweet baby carrots because they usually cook very tender. The veggies were hard and not tender. The stew itself was very bland and not seasoned. It definitely needs more seasoning. I made this in hopes that I would not have to cook supper for a couple of days. This recipe was so tasteless that no one would eat it and I ended up throwing it. Such a waste!!!
