Recipe Ingredients

This cake is so easy to make with just a few simple ingredients.

Cake Ingredients

Party Rainbow Chip Cake Mix: This is the primary base for the cake. It contains all the dry ingredients necessary for an easy-to-prepare cake batter.

Evaporated Milk: It provides a rich, creamy, and slightly savory milk base for the soak.

Sweetened Condensed Milk: Is essential for providing the sweetness and a significant portion of the rich, dense, and syrupy texture to the tres leches soak, balancing the evaporated milk.

Heavy Whipping Cream (or Whole Milk): Adds extra richness, making the cake even more decadent and moist. Alternatively, for those who prefer a less intensely rich soak, whole milk provides a slightly lighter texture and less richness than heavy cream, while still contributing to the overall milk volume and moisture.

Vanilla: It adds a warm, aromatic, and sweet note to the milk mixture, complementing the dairy flavors and adding depth to the overall taste of the cake.

Other Ingredients You’ll Need: Water, vegetable oil, and eggs.

Topping Ingredients

Heavy Whipping Cream: This forms the classic, fluffy topping for tres leches cake.

Powdered Sugar: Sweetens the whipped cream.

Vanilla: Like the vanilla in the milk mixture, this adds a pleasant, aromatic flavor to the whipped cream, enhancing its sweetness and overall appeal.

Rainbow Sprinkles (if desired): They add a festive, colorful touch to the finished cake.

How to Make Easy Rainbow Chip Tres Leches Cake

Get ready to bake a rainbow of delish! Here's how to whip up your own Easy Rainbow Chip Tres Leches Cake in just a few steps. See the full recipe below for all the details.

1. Bake Your Base

Grab your rainbow chip cake mix and combine it with water, oil, and eggs. Beat it until smooth, pour it into your pan, and bake.

2. Whip Up the Milk Bath

While your cake is cooling, it's time to create the tres leches soak. In a bowl, whisk together the evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk, heavy whipping cream (or whole milk), and a splash of vanilla. This is the secret sauce that transforms your cake into an unbelievably moist dream!

3. Give Your Cake a Milk Bath

Once your cake is slightly cooled but still warm, grab a fork or the handle of a wooden spoon and poke holes all over the top. Don't be shy – you want those holes to go almost all the way to the bottom. Slowly and evenly pour your milky mixture over the entire cake, letting it soak in. You might need to pour it in stages, giving the cake time to drink it all up.

4. Chill

Cover your pan tightly with plastic wrap and place in the refrigerator. Let it chill for at least 4 hours, or even better, overnight.

5. Top It Off

Just before you're ready to serve, use a chilled bowl and beat your cold heavy whipping cream, powdered sugar, and a hint of vanilla until stiff peaks form. Spread evenly over your chilled cake, and for the ultimate rainbow celebration, shower it with rainbow sprinkles!

How to Store Easy Rainbow Chip Tres Leches Cake

Storing your Easy Rainbow Chip Tres Leches Cake properly is crucial to maintain its deliciousness.

Refrigerator

Due to the milk-soaked cake and the whipped cream topping, this cake must be stored in the refrigerator at all times. Do not leave it at room temperature for more than 2 hours. Cover the pan tightly with plastic wrap, making sure it's sealed well around the edges. The cake will stay fresh for 3 to 4 days.

Ingredients

Cake

Tres Leches (Three Milks) Mixture

  • 1 can (12 oz) evaporated milk
  • 1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream (or whole milk for a slightly lighter texture)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Topping

  • 1 1/2 cups cold heavy whipping cream
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • Betty Crocker™ Rainbow Sprinkles, if desired

Instructions

  • Step
    1

Heat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour bottom only of 13x9-inch baking pan, or spray generously with baking spray with flour.

  • Step
    2

In large bowl, beat cake mix, water, vegetable oil, and eggs with electric mixer on medium speed 2 minutes, scraping bowl occasionally, until well beaten and smooth. Pour evenly into pan.

  • Step
    3

Bake 26 to 31 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center of cake comes out clean. Cool cake in pan on cooling rack 15 minutes.

  • Step
    4

Meanwhile, in medium bowl, beat evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk, whipping cream, and 1 teaspoon vanilla with whisk until thoroughly combined.

  • Step
    5

Once cake has cooled slightly (it should still be warm but not hot), use fork or handle of wooden spoon to poke holes all over top surface of cake, going almost all the way to bottom of cake, to allow for maximum milk absorption.

  • Step
    6

Slowly and evenly pour milk mixture over entire cake, ensuring it saturates all areas. You may need to pour it in stages, allowing milk to absorb before adding more.

  • Step
    7

Cover pan tightly with plastic wrap, and refrigerate at least 4 hours or overnight.

  • Step
    8

Just before serving, in large, chilled bowl, beat cold whipping cream, powdered sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla with electric mixer on high speed until stiff peaks form.

  • Step
    9

Remove cake from refrigerator. Spread whipped cream topping evenly over entire surface of cake. Garnish with rainbow sprinkles.
