French toast is a relatively simple thing. But that doesn't mean it has to taste basic or bland! With the right ingredients, French toast is an ethereal experience with complex flavors and a sublime texture.
Starting with thick slices of bread drenched in a flavorful egg mixture, French toast can be elevated from “Oh…French toast” to “YUM, French toast!”
Here’s how to make a fabulous, flavorful French toast that your family will drool over.
Choose the right bread. Fantastic French toast starts with the right bread. Select a bread that is thick enough to stand up to the egg mixture, such as Texas-toast style. The thicker cut allows the bread to soak up the egg without falling apart or becoming too mushy.
Prepare the egg mix. Making the egg mixture doesn’t stop at beating a few eggs. This is where you add flavor that will infuse the French toast. Use one egg and ½ teaspoon vanilla extract for every 2 slices of bread. So, if you are making French toast for four, you would whisk together 4 eggs and 2 teaspoons vanilla extract.
Season and cook. Preheat a nonstick griddle on your stovetop. Once it’s good and hot (let it heat for 5-10 minutes to ensure that it is), dip the bread in the egg mixture on both sides and then place onto the skillet. Sprinkle with ground cinnamon on the side facing up. Cook until golden brown (2-4 minutes) on both sides. Remove from the griddle and repeat the process until all of the bread has been cooked.
- Serve with fresh berries and maple syrup.
