Ingredients

1/2: cup packed brown sugar

1/2: cup butter or margarine, softened

2: tablespoons water

1: teaspoon vanilla

1 1/2: cups Gold Medal® all-purpose flour

1/8: teaspoon salt

10: pretzel rods, about 8 1/2 inches long, cut crosswise in half

2: teaspoons shortening

2/3: cup semisweet chocolate chips

: Butterscotch-flavored chips, melted

Directions

1 Heat oven to 350ºF. Mix brown sugar, butter, water and vanilla in medium bowl. Stir in flour and salt. Shape dough into twenty 1 1/4-inch balls.
2 Place pretzel rod halves on ungreased cookie sheet. Press ball of dough onto cut end of each pretzel rod. Press dough with fork to resemble "bristles" of broom.
3 Bake about 12 minutes or until set but not brown. Remove from cookie sheet. Cool completely on wire rack, about 30 minutes.
4 Cover cookie sheet with waxed paper. Place brooms on waxed paper. Heat shortening and chocolate chips over low heat, stirring occasionally, until melted and smooth; remove from heat. Spoon melted chocolate over brooms, leaving about 1 inch at top of pretzel handle and bottom halves of cookie bristles uncovered. Drizzle with melted butterscotch chips. Let stand until chocolate is set.

I only give this 4 because that picture they give you is impossible to create. Granted I cut corners and just got sugar cookie ready bake dough, but still. Overall really easy and so cute. Made the witch hats AND the Halloween chex mix. You can call me Elvira after this one. :) Happy baking all!

I've made these twice this year so far. The 2nd time definitely went a lot faster since I knew the ropes. I do have to say, though that in the future I think I'd make a different cookie dough. This tastes good, but doesn't really make sense to cook such a high-fat (1 stick of butter) cookie. It'd be just as nice with any other cookie dough. I found it helpful to kind of squeeze the dough into a triangle shape and then press on the bristles, they looked less like little fans that way. And mine didn't look like the ones in the picture really either - theirs looks unbaked and very playdohy. Thanks for the tips on them getting stale right away - good to know!

First, I was impressed that this did make as many cookies as the recipe said it would. It did take the amount of prep time and total time stated. I agree, the cookies do not look like the photo and the instructions for sculpting the cookies were useless but mine did still look great and also tasted great. Do not skip the butterscotch step! This really added a lot of flavour and visual interest. To make it fluid I added shortening to the butterscotch and used a ziploc bag to do the piping. Time consuming but impressive outcome. To avoid the staleness issue, I made them and put them in the deep freeze for my party.
