Cake
1
box Betty Crocker® SuperMoist® devil's food cake mix
1
teaspoon ground cinnamon
Water, vegetable oil and eggs called for on cake mix box
Caramelized Sugar Frosting
3/4
cup granulated sugar
1/3
cup butter
4
to 5 tablespoons milk
3
cups powdered sugar
  • 1 Heat oven to 350°F (325°F for dark or nonstick pan). Grease or spray bottom only of 13x9-inch pan. Make cake mix as directed on box--except add cinnamon to cake mix. Pour into pan.
  • 2 Bake as directed on box for 13x9-inch pan. Cool completely, about 1 hour.
  • 3 In 2-quart heavy saucepan, heat granulated sugar over medium-low heat 6 to 8 minutes, stirring constantly with wooden spoon and watching carefully, until sugar begins to melt. As sugar begins to melt, stir with wooden spoon until sugar is melted and golden brown. (Sugar becomes very hot and could melt a plastic spoon.) Remove from heat; carefully stir in butter and 1 tablespoon of the milk (mixture will become lumpy). Return to medium-low heat, stirring constantly, until mixture is smooth. Cool 5 minutes.
  • 4 Add powdered sugar to caramel mixture; beat with electric mixer on low speed until well combined. Add 3 tablespoons milk, mixing until frosting is glossy and spreadable. If necessary, add up to 1 tablespoon more milk, 1 teaspoon at a time. Spread frosting over cake. Store loosely covered.

Turned out very good and of course the cake was easy using the mix....but I agree w all that had trouble w the frosting. It took FOREVER to camelize, like a half hour of constant stirring, so that was not fun. Then when I added the milk and powdered sugar, it got grainy and there were pieces of hard sugar in it. I kept whipping and whipping it w my stand mixer and would have thrown it out except that company was coming and I was out of sugar to make more....so put it on. It's super thick and couldn't spread it on the whole cake as it was pulling up the top of the cake. I disguised this by shaving chocolate all over it. Everyone loved it but I would never make the frosting again. What a pain!

Liz...I always add a pinch or two of cinnamon to my chocolate cake patter. When used sparingly, it inhances the flavor of chocolate without actually tasting it. Since this recipe calls for 1 teaspoon, maybe your cinnamon is old because with that amout the flavor should be obvious. On a side note...thanks for the reviews on the frosting in this recipe. Very helpful for I wont bother with it. Tip, I believe you can purchase caramel flavored icing.

This cake isn't bad, but it is just a devil's food cake wrapped in a Mexican label. I could not taste the cinnamon at all. The frosting was awful and I had to toss it away. I ended up having to use store bought frosting. Never baking this again.
