Directions

  • 1 Heat oven to 350°F (325°F for dark or nonstick pan). Generously grease 1 1/2-quart round casserole or heatproof bowl and bottom only of 8x4-inch loaf pan, or spray with baking spray with flour.
  • 2 Make cake batter as directed on cake mix box. Pour half of the batter into casserole; pour remaining batter into loaf pan.
  • 3 Bake 36 to 44 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes. Run knife around sides of casserole and loaf pan to loosen cakes; remove from casserole and pan to cooling rack. Cool completely, about 1 hour. Wrap and freeze loaf cake for another use.
  • 4 Place cake, rounded side up, on serving plate. Frost with frosting. Make face on side of cake, using cookies for eyes, red gumdrop slice for nose, red shoestring licorice for mouth and black shoestring licorice for eyebrows and antennae. Sprinkle red sugar over cake to within 2 inches from curved edge of face. Place black gumdrop slices on cake for spots. Store loosely covered.

EXPERT TIPS

Expert Tips

This is a great project for little helpers. Gather cookies and candies, and let the little ones decorate. Snap a picture to capture the glow of creativity and accomplishment.

Use the loaf cake for dessert at another time when you’re really rushed. Slice the cake and top with ice cream and fruit, or drizzle with your favorite topping.

If Betty Crocker® HomeStyle fluffy white frosting mix is available in your area, you can make it for this cake instead of using the container of frosting.

I loved this idea, but I didn't love the white face on the ladybug, so I did mine as small cakes with all red icing and oreos for black faces. Then I made two larger cakes with cupcake heads again in black icing. For those big ones I used black candles as the antenna. I also added a little grass around the base of each of them. My two year old loved these cute bugs and her eyes got really big when brought them out on the tray. to see my version click here...http://fromchapelhilltochickenville.blogspot.com/2008/01/at-least-im-getting-better-at-cake.html
