Fall Baking: How To Enjoy Fall Fruits to the Fullest

Updated August 16, 2023
With a few simple swaps, we’ll show you how to put a fall spin on your favorite fruit-forward treats.

Four Sweet and Easy Recipe Swaps

As August comes to a close, all the fall feelings are starting to settle in, and with them, a bushel of fresh fruits. Of course, apples, pears and grapes are some of the most popular, but succulent plums, bright and tart cranberries and honeyed figs are among some of our ultimate autumn faves. Wonderful on their own, they’re also great seasonal swaps in some of our more well-loved desserts.

If you want a fall-forward spin on a tried-and-true treat, these four recipes have everything it takes. They’re easy to create and ripe for all seasonal occasions — give ‘em a try for back-to-school treats, Thanksgiving desserts and everything in between. And if you still need to make use of those summer berries, we’ve got a recipe for that too!

Cobbler

Cobbler

We all know and love a classic apple crisp, but if you’re ready for a fresh take on this home-baked classic, try swapping in fresh fall plums for your apples. You can quickly cobble it together for a delicious family dinner dessert or neighborhood potluck and everyone will gobble it up.

Upside down Cake

Upside-Down Cake

This recipe has everything you love about the pineapple classic — butter, brown sugar, caramelly top — with a welcome tart cranberry twist. If you have frozen cranberries, this is the perfect time to use them up! We recommend swapping this dessert for other cranberry staples at your Thanksgiving table.

Fruit bars

Fruit Bars

Bars are among some of the most universal treats — there’s a bar for nearly every fruit under the sun. But when it comes to sweet fall cravings, nothing is as spot on as our Fig Bars. Topped with oats and nuts, this recipe is as satisfying as it is delicious. The perfect after-school snack or lunch-box treat? We think so! For extra fall flavor, serve with cinnamon ice cream.

Berry Cake

Berry Cake

If you’re still at max summer berry capacity, this Triple Berry Cake recipe is for you. We love it not only because it’s so simple — your kitchen is probably already stocked with the ingredients you need — but it’s also super adaptable. One way to make a more fall-forward version? Swap out the blueberries for blackberries. Berry cake is a great bake for an easy weeknight treat or for any of the season’s special occasions.
