1
box Betty Crocker® SuperMoist® yellow cake mix
Water, vegetable oil and eggs called for on cake mix box
Tray or cardboard (19x11 inches), covered with wrapping paper and plastic food wrap or foil
1
to 1 1/2 containers Betty Crocker® Rich & Creamy vanilla frosting
Green and yellow food colors
10
small gumdrops
1
tube (0.68 oz) Betty Crocker® orange decorating gel
1
thin chocolate wafer cookie
18
tart and tangy round candies
1
stick gum
Pull-and-peel red licorice
  • 1 Heat oven to 350°F (325°F for dark or nonstick pan). Grease or spray bottom and sides of 13x9-inch pan.
  • 2 Make and bake cake mix as directed on box for 13x9-inch pan. Cool 10 minutes. Run knife around sides of pan to loosen cake; remove from pan to cooling rack. Cool completely, about 1 hour. Refrigerate or freeze cake about 1 hour or until firm.
  • 3 Using serrated knife, cut rounded top off cake to level surface; place cake cut side down. Cut 9x2-inch strip of cake as shown in diagram for guitar neck. Cut body of guitar from remaining cake. Place pieces on tray.
  • 4 Place 1/2 cup frosting in small bowl. Stir in 4 to 6 drops green food color. Into remaining vanilla frosting, stir 6 drops yellow food color. Attach guitar neck to body with small amount of frosting. Frost guitar neck with a thin layer of green frosting and frost top and sides of guitar body with a thin layer of yellow frosting to seal in crumbs. Refrigerate or freeze cake 30 to 60 minutes to set frosting. Frost entire cake with same colors.
  • 5 Press 3 gumdrops on each side of neck for tuning pegs. On neck, draw crosswise lines with decorating gel, 1 inch apart, for frets. Place wafer cookie on center of body. Place tart and tangy candies around wafer cookie. Place stick of gum 1 inch under wafer cookie. Place licorice on neck for strings. Press remaining gumdrops into frosting below gum stick. Store loosely covered.

Expert Tips

Create an attractive display by covering a piece of sturdy cardboard with wrapping paper, then plastic food wrap. Stretch and secure with tape. Or cover cardboard with foil or cooking parchment paper.

Cut cake to form guitar body. Cut 9x2-inch strip for guitar neck. Arrange guitar and neck piece on tray and decorate.

This cake can be frosted using 1 container of frosting. If you like a generous amount of frosting, you may want to have another container on hand.

Freezing the unfrosted cake pieces keeps crumbs in check so they won't get into the frosting.

My daughter has been hounding me for a guitar for months. Well not really wanting the noise around I went in search of a solution. I soon found Betty Crocker. This cake was a hit for my daughters 8th birthday! I changed up the colors, using purple for the bottom and chocolate for the top! Once I got the cake baked it was a breeze!! Everyone including my daughters dad, who is 500 miles away, was amazed at my "talent"!! Thanks Betty Crocker for making me look like the STAR mom!!!

This was a great birthday cake and it was very easy to make. The only difference is that i piped red icing and used Marshmallows instead of gumdrops ((To use marshmallows wet them slightly and roll into colored candy sprinkles )
