Ingredients

Coffee Cake

1 3/4: cups all-purpose flour

3/4: cup sugar

2: teaspoons baking powder

1/4: teaspoon baking soda

1/4: teaspoon salt

1/4: teaspoon ground nutmeg

3/4: cup buttermilk

1/3: cup butter or margarine, melted

1: teaspoon vanilla

2: eggs, beaten

Topping

1/4: cup butter or margarine, melted

3: tablespoons sugar

1/2: teaspoon ground cinnamon

Directions

1 Heat oven to 350°F. Grease bottom only of 9-inch square pan with shortening or spray bottom with cooking spray. In large bowl, stir coffee cake ingredients with spoon just until dry ingredients are moistened. Spread batter in pan.
2 Bake 30 to 40 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
3 Generously pierce hot cake with fork. Brush or drizzle 1/4 cup melted butter over hot cake. In small bowl, mix 3 tablespoons sugar and the cinnamon; sprinkle over hot cake. Serve warm.

This was a quick, easy-to-bake coffee cake. The warm spice flavor really came through and reminded my fiancee and I of a crisp, autumn evening. The nutmeg lingered on the tongue and even added flavor to the following sip of coffee. The cake stayed moist on the counter for a good three days (but didn't last any longer).
