I followed this as a guide, but changed it for what I had on hand (limited candies). I recommend using all mini loaves, and butcher one mini loaf to make the smokestack/engine house on the engine. The cut sides do NOT take frosting well -- I ended up just dumping the frosting/crumbled mess of the engine back into the 9x5 pan and using the two mini loaves I had left over (cookie pan could only fit 3 cars). I used the rest of the 5th loaf to make a tender, and put it right behind the engine so I wouldn't have to frost the raw edge. I used the left over pieces to crumble around the train as "dirt". We'll see tomorrow how my 3 year old likes this, but I'm pretty sure he will -- it's a train, and cake, and chocolate. :)

Did anyone make their frosting from scratch? What kind of plate did you have the cake on? And If making it the day before the party....what is the best way to store it?

I just loved this cake and my son was delighted! He loves trains and was anxious to help when we saw this on the web. We were surprised how easy it was and how impressive it looks. Everyone at the party loved it. I can't wait to try the cars recipe. Thank you!

This cake was amazing. I made it for my son's 4th birthday; he wanted a Toy Story birthday party. So I made this cake, and put some of his action figures in it. I used two boxes of the funfetti cake mix, which left enough mix over for 6 cupcakes. I froze the cake for almost 4 hours before I cut into it of frosted it. I did the crumb coat after my kids had gone to bed, and then stuck the cake back in the fridge until the afternoon of the next day. I used a chocolate whip cream frosting, which is really hard to add food coloring too, but worked really well because it doesn't stick or pull at the cake so you end up with less crumbs in the frosting, but I still recommend a crumb coat. I put black liqurious bits int the front back of the engine, and a miniature toy Woody in the divet to look like he was driving. The next car had mini M&M's in it, the next car had his #4 birthday candle, and salt water taffy, the third car I put some fruit snacks in, and the last car I put a miniature toy alien from Toy Story, and more salt water taffy. Instead of peach O's I used gummy Life Saver's for the wheels, and instead of making the train track out of frosting I bought chocolate Twizlers, and cut them into pieces about 2 1/2 inches long, then I took more chocolate twizlers and cut them in half lenghtwise, and laid them over the 2 1/2 inch strips for the railroad ties and bars. It looke amazing I set it up on display for the party, and people didn't even know it was the cake. Everyone was amazed that I made it, and how nice it looked. My son was so excited about it. I couldn't believe how easy it was to make and frost. I did do a dry run about two weeks before the party that I didn't finish with all the extra candy pieces, just to see if one I could do it, and two how difficult it would be to make. I'm not an expert baker, or cake decorator, although I am very creative, so maybe that helped a little. Truely a fantastic idea.

I made the cake for my 2 year old grandson. The kids almost could not wait to start eating the candy off the cars. They loved it. Instead of using a cake mix I used 2 boxed pound cakes. They were easier to cut, and iceing, didn,t crumble. Now I have to start looking for a cake for the 4 year old,I know he will be looking for grammy to make him one.

Wow! I made this cake for my grandson's 2nd birthday party on June l8 (made it the l7th), 2010. Again, I have to wonder, just like the watermelon cake I made for the 4th of July, does anyone else have trouble with the lightness of using the cake mix vs. scratch? It was difficult due to extensive crumbing, even after freezing the cake. But, it was worth the hard work, in the end, not perfect as I push myself to do, but was a great hit at the party. Others thought his parent's bought the cake. And you should have seen him and his 3 year-old brother, standing in front of it, eyes aglow, smiles galore, then after singing HAPPY BIRTHDAY, their parents allowed them to DIG IN! They are not usually allowed candy, so all the decorative candies were a real treat to them. During the whole preamble, he kept saying CHOO-CHOO! They are both into Thomas, that's why I made the train cake. However, I didn't know in advance that the theme was MICKEY MOUSE, so we put little mickey mouse on toothpicks in the train. Since this was a centerpiece and couldn't accomodate all the people at the party, I'd also made the ICE CREAM CONE CUPCAKES, which neither I, nor the parents, had ever heard of. What a hit, a less messy way to eat cupcakes. I AM GETTING VERY ADEPT AT THIS BISQUICK/BETTY CROCKER WEBSITE AND ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT. I told my daughter-in-law, next birthday, I'd show her all 60 of the theme cakes, and let her pick which one she wants me to do. I AM RELIVING MEMORIES OF MY KIDS THAT I DID THIS FOR BY DOING SO FOR MY GRANDKIDS ------------ AND LOVING IT EVERY MINUTE>
