I was really disappointed with this recipe. I was expecting it to taste a bit like a tamale. There wasn't any resemblance. We all thought the topping was blah. I won't be making this again.

first of all, i rarely ever post anything anywhere cuz it just isn't worth it. that being said, i am a native south texan who just loves the december holiday season when homemade tamales complement the turkey, ham, etc or are just the meal. this meal can be called tamale pot pie, but it still isn't a rose... heck as i shudder when i think even throwing a canned tamale (blasphemy there) would at least have one ingradient similiar to a tamale (btw ingradients would be masa, pork (90% of homemade and i mean real tamales. yes the varieties of bean and jalapenos can be good, but i have never even seen ground anything or olives in mexican food. yes tasty as taco bell can be taco bell is only inspired by mexican food. it is by no means like anything i would want if i was trying to find a taqueria anywhere in texas.) so please put your cumino (cumin for catsup/hot sauce eaters:), and chil powder, nope not a tamale ingredient, but why call a ground beef casserole a tamale? diced tomatoes, too. please call a friend's abuela or tia, and have a fresh, hot, homemade tamale. off to find a taqueria and get some good old tacos de chorizo con huevos or chilaquiles. i better get them while most folks don't know about them and a casserole is created here using few of their natural ingredients and people somehow feel their world of foods are really expanding.

We loved it! The only change I made to the recipe was to use 2 lb. ground beef and baked it in an 8x12 casserole. Will definitely make it again.

Fantastic and quick main dish. I added a large frozen package of SouthWest Corn with Red Pepper Mix, a small can of chopped fire roasted green chili, and a extra chili powder for more spice flavor. I also added prepackaged Mexican three cheese on the topping towards the end of cooking. Pepper Jack cheese would also be delicious, but maybe a little spicy for some folks taste buds. My family enjoys hot and spicy Mexican food.

I substituted a can of diced green chilies for the black olives, doubled everything else in the recipe and baked it in a 9" X 13" glass baking dish. My family loved it!! Excellent recipe!! :0)

Made this tonight, with the following modifications: I used 1/2 lb. of ground beef, added a can of black beans, omitted the olives and used petite cut tomatoes with jalapenos for extra kick. I also used Bisquick Heart Smart. It was perfectly done in 25 minutes and was very tasty and filling. The topping wasn't mushy at all. I'll definitely make this again.

This is a keeper! I doubled the recipe and baked it in a 9x13 dish. Added taco seasoning to hamburger and topped hamburger layer with cheddar cheese. Doubled the dough also. Did not have a problem with the dough being mushy. All the toppings were offered on the table so everyone can fix their own to their liking. We all loved it!

Super recipe with some modifications, but I have been cooking for some years. The mushy topping, that hndodds and others have identified, can be cured by reducing the oven heat to 350-375 degrees. It is not a good thing to rush any topping. I was out of Black olives, so omitted, added a can of Mexicorn, instead of frozen, and added a medium Onion sauteed with the beef, and garlic powder. If you are expecting a spicy meal, this is not for you, but if you like a good tasting, layered flavor recipe....go for it!

Made this by doubling the recipe, adding taco seasoning to the meat after cooking it and using the juice from the tomatoes rather than adding water. I cooked the meat this way a little longer than the recipe calls for. It was great! I also had the thin layer of corn meal mush another reviewer talked about, but that usually happens when you bake a thick bread layer on top of a filling, in my experience. The price of convenience :)
