We’re especially fond of this sweet-and-smoky picnic favorite. And it’s easy to make, too! Only 20 minutes of prep time needed.

This is the same basic recipe my mom has been using for about 60 years. (She's 85 yo) The beans always have turned out tender and great! She would make them extremely thick so we could make bean sandwiches to carry in our lunches to school. To this day I still use this same recipe and enjoy the beans every time. And yes, salt is always added at the beginning of the cooking. Not sure where magnoliasouth is coming from but maybe the recipe wasn't followed correctly?

Beblovestocook....I totally agree with you! I too have been cooking for many years and have never heard of not salting beans before cooking!!I don't need "Google" to know how to cook.I have always salted my beans and they come out so tender they melt in your mouth. Some people just don't know how to cook beans properly. I too have been cooking beans many years before "google" This recipe is really good!!! You can't always believe what google tells you.In my opinion if you need google to cook than maybe you should not be cooking! lol!!!

One word: Yuck! I had high hopes for this, I really did. Although, I could hear a warning bell ringing when I read to add salt before the beans were cooked to tenderness. As a rule (Google it for yourself) you should NEVER put salt in beans before they're cooked. They will never get tender. Alas, this did not either. As much as I wanted this to work, it didn't. I'm going to find a recipe instead that has me soak them overnight, then add everything and cook. Sorry Betty, but I cannot lie. Now as for Dinowife, Valerie1964 has that right. You have to find a crockpot recipe to use a crockpot, so her review is unfair. I cannot say how disappointed I am in this. There is really nothing that could improve it, I'm afraid. I will say that it smelled wonderful in the oven and I suspect your other reviewers look at it half-way through and thought how good they were going to be, so wrote a review. This is just not so. I will also say that I seldom give recipes bad reviews and I'm a very experienced cook. I followed this to the letter and it just doesn't work. Good luck to anyone else who tries.

A note to Dinowife --- crock pots don't allow for great steam escape. You won't be able to cook down to a thick sauce unless you uncover the crock and encourage the water to evaporate! There are other "old fashion" recipes for beans that have been modified for the crock pot --- with 13 cups of water, this one isn't really suitable.

Awful! I made this in the crock pot--I only added 6 cups of water and had the beans floating in liquid after 7 hours of cooking. Too sweet and no sauce...just watery liquid.

This is my favorite baked bean recipe, and it warms up the kitchen on a cold, snowy day. I like it with ribs, coleslaw, and cornbread.
