Expert Tips

Navy beans are actually one variety of kidney bean. These small white beans are so named because they’ve been a standard food of the U.S. Navy since the mid-1800s.

Why not serve these savory, slightly sweet beans in hollowed-out round dinner rolls? When the beans are gone, you’ll have a sauce-soaked piece of bread to enjoy!

Beblovestocook....I totally agree with you! I too have been cooking for many years and have never heard of not salting beans before cooking!!I don't need "Google" to know how to cook.I have always salted my beans and they come out so tender they melt in your mouth. Some people just don't know how to cook beans properly. I too have been cooking beans many years before "google" This recipe is really good!!! You can't always believe what google tells you.In my opinion if you need google to cook than maybe you should not be cooking! lol!!!

One word: Yuck! I had high hopes for this, I really did. Although, I could hear a warning bell ringing when I read to add salt before the beans were cooked to tenderness. As a rule (Google it for yourself) you should NEVER put salt in beans before they're cooked. They will never get tender. Alas, this did not either. As much as I wanted this to work, it didn't. I'm going to find a recipe instead that has me soak them overnight, then add everything and cook. Sorry Betty, but I cannot lie. Now as for Dinowife, Valerie1964 has that right. You have to find a crockpot recipe to use a crockpot, so her review is unfair. I cannot say how disappointed I am in this. There is really nothing that could improve it, I'm afraid. I will say that it smelled wonderful in the oven and I suspect your other reviewers look at it half-way through and thought how good they were going to be, so wrote a review. This is just not so. I will also say that I seldom give recipes bad reviews and I'm a very experienced cook. I followed this to the letter and it just doesn't work. Good luck to anyone else who tries.
