Not bad for my first try. But I will not be adding any salt next time. It was too salty.

Made the hummus for the first time. I used extra lemon juice, garlic, and olive oil. I did put a little chili power in it. It was great and the talk of the night. Easy to make.

This recipe turned out great. left out the sesame seeds just because I didn't have any and added a little red and black pepper. awesome! better than store bought and a 5th of the price!

Not bad at all. To all, garbanzos ARE the same as chick peas, and tahin is essentially ground up sesame seeds. So the basic ingredients are pretty much the same. However, I like using tahin because it gives the recipe a much smoother texture. And, I'm used to much spicier dishes so I always add more garlic. It's fun to experiment with different spices. I wonder if the texture would be different if the sesame seeds were ground first before adding them to the rest of the ingredients?

Tanya2100 is completely correct, I did as Food for Dolphins suggested and "googled" it and they are the same, but only a language root difference. (see wikipedia for details) This recipe was made for a recent dinner party where foodies were served with experience from all over the world. They found it to be almost exactly as it is served in the Mediterranean. The only difference was that mine was a bit more mealy than usually made, but I like that texture, so it was my choice. (it hangs on the cracker/bread/pita better.) If you compare this to the commercial chain store bought item , your comparing apples and oranges. I compared mine to a local mom and pop that make it fresh in the store and it was nearly perfect...but SO MUCH CHEAPER.

sjz003 is correct. I lived in Pakastan for 7 years and visited the neighboring countries. Each country makes it a little different than the one next to it. The only reason some call them chickpeas and some call them garbanzo beans, again it depends on what country you are talking about. I noticed here in US people forget the citrus. Don't forget the citrus. It works very well against the garlic. :)

This recipe is incorrect. There are seven ingredients to hummus. One can chick peas, 1/4 cup tahini (which is a sesame paste)(not sesame seeds), juice of one lemon, 2tbs olive oil, 1/4 tsp salt, 1-2 smaller cloves of garlic depending on your taste, and a little cayanne pepper. I received this recipe from from a middle eastern store and this is what they serve.

The ingredient listed as 1/2 cup sesame seeds should be sesame seed PASTE called Tahini and the amount should read about 1/4 cup or to taste. Tahini is what gives hummus its distinctive taste and it can be found in most supermarkets on the Ethnic Foods aisle.
