Ingredients

Cake

  • 1 2/3 cups Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground allspice
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar

Apple Cider Sauce

  • 1/4 cup butter or margarine
  • 1/4 cup apple cider or orange juice
  • 2 tablespoons whipping cream
Make With
Gold Medal Flour

Steps

  • 1
Heat oven to 350°F. In ungreased 8-inch square pan, mix flour, 1 cup brown sugar, the allspice and baking soda with fork. Stir in all remaining cake ingredients until blended.
  • 2
Bake 35 to 40 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
  • 3
In 1 1/2-quart saucepan, heat all sauce ingredients to rolling boil over high heat, stirring constantly; reduce heat slightly. Boil 3 minutes, stirring frequently. (Watch carefully; mixture burns easily.) Store sauce in refrigerator.

Tips from the Betty Crocker Kitchens

  • tip 1
Stick with real butter or margarine for the best results! Vegetable oil spreads don’t work well in the sauce.
  • tip 2
Applesauce Shortcake is as easy as topping cake squares with warmed apple pie filling, mounds of whipped cream and the sweet sauce.
