Happy Birthday, Baby

January 22, 2013

Your little one is turning 1! What better way to celebrate than with a big bash at home, Cheerios-style? Gather all of his or her friends—OK, maybe more like all of your friends—and family members to celebrate. Here are some of Betty’s best ideas and inspirations for throwing a first birthday everyone’s sure to remember.

The Theme
When it comes to 1-year-olds, Cheerios are always a winner. Kids will be starry-eyed seeing so many of their first finger foods at the party (and don’t be surprised if parents get a little nostalgic too).

The Décor
Don’t let pinning and planning get you in a whirl. Betty’s whipped up some cute and creative tips to get your party started.

  • Create inexpensive centerpieces by filling your favorite bowls with a variety of Cheerios and other objects, such as toys or number candles.

  • Take a nod from primary colors for your tabletop décor and turn old Cheerios boxes into a bright hanging flag display.

  • If you’re feeling crafty, cover a giant number 1 (purchase from a craft store or create your own from foam core) in lots and lots of Cheerios—it’s a real attention-grabber!

  • If you have older siblings or many kid guests, consider having a craft table where they can all make a Cheerios picture frame.

The Menu
Plan and prep as much as you can ahead of time. You don’t want to miss a moment of your little one’s party. Keep it simple with kid-friendly party foods, drinks for the grown-ups and juice boxes for the kids.

The Cake

Made extra-moist with ripe bananas, cream cheese and yogurt, this is a smash-worthy cake little ones will love.
