Edible Christmas Ornaments

Posted By Angie McGowan
November 30, 2012

These simple edible Christmas ornaments are so much fun to make with the kids.

The holiday season is upon us, and it’s time to start decorating the house, trimming the tree and doing fun holiday crafts with the kids. When I was a kid, my mom and I use to make salt ornament. They look like these ornaments, but they’re no good to eat. I thought I would make some edible ornaments this year that we could all enjoy.

To get these ornaments started, you need just a few ingredients, Bisquick baking mix, powdered sugar, an egg and some butter.

xmas-1

Place all the ingredients in a large bowl and mix it up with a whisk or pasty knife until a soft dough forms.

xmas-3

Oh, and don’t forget a little vanilla. This will make them taste and smell wonderful.

xmas-4

If your kids aren’t helping yet, be sure to bring them in the kitchen for this part. The tiniest hands can help with this step. Just place a cup of Bisquick on a work surface and them place the soft dough on top. Let your kids have fun kneading the dry baking mix into the wet dough. Your kids will have so much fun with this part, and learn the basics of kneading dough too.

xmas-6

Next it’s time to roll the dough. You might want to help little ones with this step. Roll the dough to about 1/4 inch thick. These cookies should be a little thicker than regular sugar cookies.

xmas-5

Next, have your kids place the cookie cutters on the dough and cut out all the cookies.

xmas-10

After the cookies are placed on the cookie sheet, help your kids cut out a hole for the ribbon using a straw like so.

xmas-11

Now the cookies are ready for the oven. We’re going to cook these a little lower and longer than average to help dry them more. The harder the cookie, the better it will be as an ornament.

xmas-2-2

You can see these cookies are pretty brown. That way they make sturdier ornaments.

You can stop at this step, let the cookie cool completely on the cookie sheet and them tie ribbons around them.

xmas-1-2

Or you can decorate them with Betty Crocker cookie icing.

xmas-3-2

This icing is super easy for kids, and comes in lots of colors.

xmas-7-2

xmas-8-2

xmas-4-2

xmas-5-2

You can make different designs and even add sprinkles to you decorated ornaments. When you’ve finished decorating, hang with a ribbon on the tree.

xmas-10-2

This would be a perfect Christmas eve project so you can enjoy the edible ornaments that night and on Christmas morning too.
