New size boxes on cake mix

For 10 years for more I have used BC cake mix at my bakery. I memorize all the recipes by heart... so I thought. Can any1 tell me when the box size changed. I normally mix up 20 box and normally 1 1/4 cup water go in each box but not anymore. It is not 1 cup water. Since I already had it memorized I have messed up countless cakes and just didn't know what was going on. I think BC really could have warned of the new size/measurement for the old faithful users. Now each cake need more product because the new size is not enough. Smaller size and larger price is not right at all.

Hi, nikkij8327.  Unfortunately, I have noticed that the size of many products is being reduced presumably to keep from increasing costs too much...though the prices are increasing also.  It is a real pain and not just for cake mixes but for many other recipes since I generally have to buy additional bags/boxes/etc. of the product to get the correct amount needed.

It seems to me that it would be much simpler to just leave the size as it is and raise the price. I'm certainly not an economics expert, but it seems that having to bear the cost of switching to a smaller box and revise the recipe would not be the economical way to go. Along with that, homemakers will express their frustration. I use box mixes on as well as scratch bake, but I will bake to fit the pan sizes I have and it looks like that will be more scratch baking.

What does it really matter what anyone suggests or replies. It won't change anything the same way it didn't change the potato mix and the brownies. Is the company feeling the pinch yet? if not i"m sure they will people are tired of having the product they buy and have bought for a long time messed with.  I quit buy betty crocker along time ago. If you dont care what the comsumer feels or thinks and all you can say is the same old reply why should I give you my business? I either bake from scratcd or use another brand. Sorry but that is my personal opinion.

I'm with you !!!   I bake from scratch most often but loved the dependibility we used to receive from Betty....  Well now I say scrap her I will find another quick baking tool when I don't have time for scratch.

Wow!! I have the same scenario. I have been using BC mixes for about 8 years and I am not happy about the change. I understand being cost effective..but as stated earlier a warning would have been nice. I finally figured it out after I messed up a ton of cakes one weekend.

I agree, I have been making 4 or 5 cakes a week at my restaraunt and didn't notice the change in the ingredients, I also have memorized the old box measurements.  I am so dissapointed in the outcome of the cakes now. I have bragged on how much better and how much higher these cakes rise compared to the other name brand cakes, but that isn't the case now.  Now I will buy which ever cake mixed are on sale because there is no differnce. What is this country coming to. If they are trying to cut down on cost what are the gaining, seems to me they will be losing alot of customers, so how do they justify this.

I agree with everyone.  I think it was sneaky for BC to change the cake mix weight content on their boxes and then keep the price the same.  And if it was not a sneaky thing, then why not let everyone know of the change, maybe by labeling on the box that it's changed!  To say you care for the consumer, how can that be when one person responded by using 20 boxes, only to come out short on her end result and wasting all that money!  I felt really bad for that person and think BC do something for that person.  I think a lot of us would rather pay a little more for the same quantity of cake mix, versus having to redo all of our recipes to accommodate a cake company's decision to decrease the size and leave the price the same.  So what's the difference, you are still paying more for the cake mix, so why decrease it and create problems for bakers.  Just my thought.  Anyway, there are some cake mixes that have not reduced their cake content weight size.

What's up with my big print on the above reply???  Surprise Oh my, I noticed that and thought what happened, I must have somehow changed the font size.  It looked exactly like they way I am typing now, so I do not know why it looked different when I sent.  Hopefully this one won't be in a big font, I will cross my fingers!

I LIKE the larger size print!

I also was surprised about the size being altered. I made a cake using the cake mix as a base, one that i have been making for years, and was shocked when it did not turn out correctly. (the cake was being made for a party) I have always used betty crocker because i prefer it to other brands. But i will now begin using a brand that has not changed it's cake mix size, to be able to continue to use the recipes i have without altering, and not have to use a protion of a second box. I think betty crocker sales will be hurt once consumers notice the size has been decreased.

I was also upset with the size, I do weddings and I had to use more boxes, I was disappointed in the texture of the cake and the batter was thinner and it was not as white as the previous ones.  Iwillnot buy Betty Crocker cake mixes again until they change the formula back to the old one,  I would evenn pay a few more cents per box to get the better quality.

I too am very upset that BC sneaked this one on us. The box is way smaller but the price wasn't reduced! Its safe to say that I will either bake more from scratch or get another brand. BC evidently did not care about the legions of bakers who were loyal to them. No more. I think you will have a lot of bakers jumping ship...as I will do.  At this size, I have purchased my last BC box.

Fri. when I went to our little local market, their Best Choice (store brand) cake mixes were on sale for 69 cents. I knew the size was changing from 18.25 oz to 15.25oz. and the price was going up. They carry most all of the popular brands. Sure enough, the smaller sizes are, in some flavors, already decreased in size. It looks like all of the brand mixes are going to go to smaller size. I bought several mixes, but since  I'm not going to replace my sheet cake pans, I'll just bake from scratch. It amazed me that 2 of the women buying mixes at the time, did not notice the decreased size until I showed them. The store still had some BC 18.25 oz on the shelf in chocolate and white mix, but yellow was already in the smaller box. I could feel the difference immediate, but I'm a person that is very detail oriented. Some people are not and don't notice it.

I'm afraid BC has made a mistake on this one by just not raising the price and leaving the size alone. On most commodities, where other things are not critical, such as pan size for the product, reducing the size can be much less of a problem, but with baking, other costly equipment elements are involved. There are too many scratch recipes out there geared to exisiting equipment. Personally, I won't buy 2 mixes and mess up another pan for the overage, for a cake. I'll just go from scratch to begin with.

I fully Agree with you. It only takes minutes longer with the right recipe. The added bonus is knowing the accomplishment is all yours.  Personaly my favorite is to scratch bake and only use mixes when short on time. Now when I feel that" time is of the essence" it will get done the day before or not at all. So much for having the old stand by.

I also think that BC made a mistake in resizing.  When it comes to a product you trust your more willing to buy it at a larger price. It just like getting your hair cut, go to who you trust not who is the cheepest or you will look cheep in the end.

I have also been using the Super Moist cake mixes for over 20 years. I went to a dicount store and they had both sizes and it was a wake up call. I have tried other brands and was always happy with the Betty Crocker but not anymore! I will be opening a store front soon and now I have to find a cake to use. This is truly the worst thing that has happed since they changed the country crock recipe and forget to mention it. When will companies learn that the customer should come first? This change messes up all old recipe books as well. I feel for everyone and I am sad that I no longer love Betty Crocker...:(

Thanks for pointing this change out! I got worried because I hadn't been aware and I just bought up a bunch of BC cake mixes because they were on sale. I think I got lucky. Where I am in Germany, the military commissary I shop at hasn't started stocking the smaller size boxes yet. I plan to go out next week and buy a bunch more to have on hand until I can find an alternative because I definitely will not stick with the BC cake mixes if they produce a subpar product!

10/26/2011 1:10 PM

I have a lot of the older recipes that call for one box of the cake mix to be used in the recipe. They won't work now. what about all the cookbooks and pamphlet sized recipe books people have been collecting over the years and still have? This was a very short-sighted decision.

I so agree. The 3 lost ounces make a big difference.  I do a lot of wedding cakes, graduation cakes, birthday cakes, etc. and I just bought a whole cart full of Duncan Hines cake mixes today...same price and 3 more ounces.  I'm disappointed in you, Betty Crocker.
