I also use vanilla frosting and put red and green M and M peanuts on top

we would put the jam in the whole before we baked the cookie. Mmmmm Nice and gooey in the middle.

After you make thumbprint cookies, let them cool. Then add whatever kind of frosting you want in the center of the cookie using a small spoon to scoop the frosting up and smooth it into the cookie. Do not stack until the frosting has dried or you will have a gooey mess. from: Cookiemom

Epqueen, I haven't made these with frosting, but I have used chocolate chips in the indentation. They melt when the cookie is warm, and are more solid when it cools. You could also use white, peanut butter or butterscotch chips in place of the chocolate ones. Sorry if this doesn't really answer your question, but this is the best I have.

If I want to fill them with frosting instead of jelly or jam {as my Grandma did}, what do I do? I cannot find a recipe for this version anywhere!
