Brownies are, inarguably, one of the most beloved uses of chocolate in the world. When served with a cold glass of milk, they possess special powers. I’ve seen small children and otherwise self-controlled adults devour them. In my house, it's rare for a pan of brownies to survive until morning...this recipe won't help matters!
A common pairing in Mexican cooking, cayenne and chocolate are at their best in brownies. Even if you’re not a spicy-food person, the warmth of the cayenne coupled with the sweetness of the brownies will be surprisingly addictive. It’s like a fiesta for your mouth.
Since I enjoy a little texture in my brownies, I added chunks of dark chocolate (use the good stuff if you can), which yield molten brownies when hot or decadent, bittersweet bites when cool. Serve them after a Mexican-themed meal with a cup of steaming, cinnamon-spiked coffee. Ay caramba!
