  • 1 Heat oven to 350°F (325°F for dark or nonstick pan). Grease or spray bottom and sides of 13x9-inch pan. Make and bake cake as directed on box for 13x9-inch pan. Cool 10 minutes; remove cake from pan to cooling rack. Cool completely, about 1 hour. Refrigerate or freeze cake about 1 hour or until firm.
  • 2 Using serrated knife, cut rounded dome from top of cake to make flat surface; place cake cut side down. Cut cake as shown in diagram.
  • 3 Place cake piece 1 on tray. Arrange pieces 2, 3 and 4 as shown in diagram, trimming to fit, standing up piece 3 for top fin. Trim point of piece 2 for nose of ship. Attach each piece with a small amount of frosting.
  • 4 Spread thin layer of frosting on cake to seal in crumbs. Freeze 30 to 45 minutes to set frosting. Frost cake with remaining frosting. Let frosting set a few minutes. Carefully cover with paper towel and gently pat to give a fabric-like appearance; remove towel. Use fruit snack for strips as shown in photograph. Outline as desired with decorating gel. Store loosely covered.

I made this cake and it came out great. I made it for an event for my sons Cub Scout pack where both Father and Son have to make a cake. I am by no means a baker or a cook, and the cake did not look as nice as this one, but structurally it came out fine and we won second place. Unfortunately the boys dug in before I got a picture taken. Please be forewarned, cake is not good for you. I would hate for a health conscious person to make this cake by mistake thinking it was in some way nutritious or good for you. I would suggest before starting the cake to look at the ingredients list and if it has something on the list that you feel is unhealthy avoid making the cake and instead eat carrots.

This cake sucks. I had to buy 3 boxes because the cake quality was terrible and it was crumbling. The fruit rollups are terrible for your teeth and your health. The cake mix is a chemical in a box, so is the icing. If you want to make a good quality cake then make it homemade. P.S. I never finished the cake because I got so frustrated, I called a profesional cake decorater, to help me and she gave me instruction by instruction, and she couldn't even solve, don't ever make this cake!!!
