  • 3 Make brownie mix as directed on box, using water, oil and eggs. Spread half of the brownie batter in pan. Top with one-third of the salted dulce de leche. With butter knife, swirl dulce de leche into batter. Carefully spread remaining brownie batter on top. Top with remaining two-thirds salted dulce del leche; swirl into batter.
  • 4 Bake 40 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out almost clean (with a few moist crumbs). Cool completely.

  • 6 Cut brownies into 3 rows by 3 rows. Top with melted dark chocolate and generous sprinkle of sea salt. Refrigerate until chocolate is set, about 15 minutes.

EXPERT TIPS

Expert Tips

To save time, you can substitute 1 can (13.4 oz) dulce de leche (caramelized sweetened condensed milk) and skip step 1.

Store brownies in the refrigerator up to 3 days. They taste even better the longer they sit!

Dulce de leche is nice to have on hand for making these brownies. Also try it drizzled on dessert pizza or ice cream, or use it to make frosting.

These brownies come out great - we love homemade dulce de leche in our house. One method for making dulce that none of the reviews mentioned was in a pressure cooker. Wait - hear me out! I was terrified of pressure cookers until I started seriously researching them. Now I have two and use them almost daily. Making the dulce in one is so easy, quick and non-time intensive. Keeping the cans pressurized in the cooker surrounded with water keeps any "explosions" from happening. After finding directions on the internet, I put three cans of sw.cond.milk into the cooker setting them on a rack to keep them off the bottom of the pan. Fill with water to cover the cans. Put lid on cooker, bring to pressure and cook for 15 minutes. At the end of the 15 minutes carefully move the pressure cooker off the burner and let set overnight until completely cooled. After cooled you can dry off the cans and use or store for future use. I do this every month or so and always have a stash of dulce de leche around for recipes or ice cream topping. NOTE: Before using a pressure cooker be sure to read the instructions and understand how the cooker works before using. Accidents will happen if you don't. Besides, you will never have any idea how timesaving they can be or the huge range of meals you can make in them unless you research it.

These are outrageously good. It's just a shame the one-spoon ratings drag down the average for these great brownies, especially considering many of them didn't even rate them! They rated what they thought was an unsafe way to cook the milk, not how these taste. So find another way to cook the milk if that makes you happy, but don't downgrade the product. These are delicious!
