Expert Tips

The fun part of Harper’s Surprise is to add whatever toppings you like. Chopped nuts, coconut, toffee bits, mini chips, and candy sprinkles—anything that sounds good to you.

Keep Harper’s Surprise in the refrigerator. You don’t want the chocolate to melt.

I have been making these bars for many years and they are always a big hit. The recipe that I use calls for 1 cup of brown sugar instead of 1/2 cup of white. People can't believe they are saltines. My sister has made them with peanut butter chips swirled into the chocolate. For a neater bar, score them before putting in the fridge. They will break apart in a more uniform way.

I just made this tonight and it was a big hit! It was very quick and easy. I followed the directions exactly and was done in 15 minutes. I used pecans and sprinkles for the toppings. I will be sure to do this recipe again.
