Ingredients

Steps

  • 1
Heat oven to 350°F (325°F for dark or nonstick pans). Spray bottoms and sides of 2 (8- or 9-inch) round cake pans with cooking spray. Make and bake cake mix as directed on box for 8- or 9-inch rounds. Cool 10 minutes. Remove from pans to cooking racks. Cool completely, about 1 hour. For easier handling, refrigerate or freeze cakes for 30 to 60 minutes.
  • 2
See link below for diagram and templates. Place templates over cakes as shown; cut around templates. Arrange cake on tray as shown.
  • 3
Spoon frosting into large bowl. Stir in enough food color until desired green color. Spread thin layer of frosting over cake pieces to seal in crumbs. Refrigerate cake 30 minutes to set frosting.
  • 4
Frost cake pieces with remaining frosting. Use 11 milk chocolate candies for spikes along back of dinosaur. Decorate body with assorted candies for spots. Use 2 candy-coated chocolate candies for eyes and white decorating icing to make centers of eyes and teeth. Store loosely covered at room temperature.

Tips from the Betty Crocker Kitchens

  • tip 1
Use a variety of candies, like chocolate rocks and chocolate chips, to make your dinosaur come alive.
  • tip 2
Serve your dino on a large rectangular cheese slate or make a display board by covering a sturdy piece of cardboard with colorful wrapping paper, then plastic food wrap. Stretch and secure with tape. Or cover cardboard with foil or cooking parchment paper.
  • tip 3
Follow our Dino Party Guide for table setting ideas, inexpensive treats and a complete foolproof menu.
  • tip 4
Try tinting frosting with Betty Crocker™ Neon Green Gel Food Color for an electric green color. Be sure to start with a small amount of food color and stir well before adding more, if you want a darker color.
  • tip 5
Applying a thin layer of frosting or a "crumb coat" to the cake and refrigerating helps to seal in the crumbs before the final frosting.
  • tip 6
Swap in your favorite flavor of Betty Crocker™ Super Moist™ Cake Mix for the Devil's Food in this recipe. Make and bake cake mix as directed on box for 8- or 9-inch rounds.
