Ingredients

4: squares foil (8 inch)

20: red ring-shaped hard candies (from 6.5-oz bag)

8: green ring-shaped hard candies (from 6.5-oz bag)

2: plastic drinking straws, cut into 4-inch pieces

: Gold dragees (nonedible; for decoration only) or yellow nonpareil candy decors

: Toothpicks

4: pieces 1/8-inch-wide ribbon or monofilament line (fishing line), 6 to 8 inches long

Directions

1 Heat oven to 325°F; place 1 square of foil on cookie sheet. Because of the variables in how different colors of candies melt and the need to work quickly to complete the ornament after removing it from the oven, baking more than one ornament at a time is not recommended.
2 See illustration a. Unwrap only the red candies. On foil, arrange 5 red candies in circle, leaving an opening about 1/2 inch in diameter in the center. With wrappers on, cut 6 green candies in half and 1 green candy into quarters with scissors or knife; remove wrappers.* For leaves, arrange 3 green halves, rounded side out, on 3 sides of the red candies, making sure cut sides touch red candies. Place 1 green quarter of candy in center of red candies. Very carefully transfer cookie sheet to oven, baking only one ornament at a time. (Candies must be fresh in order to melt properly; if they aren’t, they will not melt.)
3 Bake 3 to 6 minutes, watching closely for candy to melt (melting time will depend on the candy and how much you want the ornament to melt).** Remove from oven; immediately insert end of drinking straw 1/2 inch from top of ornament to create opening for hanging; sprinkle ornament lightly with candy decors. Rotate straw a quarter turn after 30 seconds and again after 1 minute; remove straw (this prevents the straw from sticking to the candy, which could cause the ornament to break when removed).
4 Working quickly, form flower petal points by drawing the tip of a toothpick through each candy to form a point. If the candy has cooled too much, return the cookie sheet to the oven and heat 1 to 2 minutes longer and try again. Allow ornament to cool completely on cookie sheet; gently remove foil. Thread ribbon through the hole made with the straw to hang the ornament (see illustration b).

*Cutting candies with the wrapper on prevents shattering.

**Due to the heat of melted candy, ornaments continue to melt slightly once out of the oven until the temperature of the candy drops. Also, smaller pieces and outside pieces melt more quickly.

Santa Ornaments: To make 4 ornaments, you will need 4 red, 4 orange and 20 white ring-shaped hard candies. Use small round candies for the eyes and nose. On foil, arrange 5 white candies in a circle, then add 1 orange candy in center for face and 1 red candy at top for hat (see illustration). Continue as directed in step 3--except omit candy decors and instead sprinkle coconut on ornament for “beard,” pressing lightly with back of spoon. Add candies for eyes and nose, pressing lightly. Cool as directed in step 4. Tree Ornaments: To make 4 ornaments, you will need 24 green and 4 purple ring-shaped hard candies. On foil, arrange green candies to make 1 row of 3 candies, 1 row of 2 candies and 1 row of 1 candy (see illustration). Add 1 purple candy at center of bottom row for trunk. Continue as directed in step 3--except omit candy decors and instead sprinkle tree with desired candy decorations. Cool as directed in step 4. Wreath Ornaments: To make 4 ornaments, you will need 24 green and 8 red ring-shaped hard candies (cut in half). On foil, arrange 6 green candies in a circle, then add 4 red candy halves on either side of one green candy to create bow (see illustration). Continue as directed in step 3--except omit candy decors and instead sprinkle wreath with desired candy decorations. Cool as directed in step 4. •Sun Catcher Ornaments: Hang ornaments on a window. •Christmas Candy Lollipops: Insert paper candy or cookie stick into bottom of any shape of ornament immediately after removing it from the oven (omit straw). Cool completely before removing from foil.

•Make Sun Catchers! Just hang the ornaments on a window with one of those suction cup type hangers available in hardware stores or in the hardware department of large discount stores. •Make a sweet treat of Christmas Candy Lollipops. Insert paper candy or cookie stick into bottom of any shape of ornament immediately after removing it from the oven (omit straw). Cool completely before removing from foil.
