EXPERT TIPS

Expert Tips

There is no need to peel the orange before chopping it because the peel will crystallize due to the slow cooking and amount of sugar. The peel also gives the conserve a wonderful orange flavor.

A conserve is a type of preserves that contains two or more fruits and some type of nut. It usually is used as a spread for toast, biscuits, scones and bread. The orange flavor of this conserve, however, makes it a tasty accompaniment to pork, ham, chicken, turkey and duck-both wild and domestic.

Try this in the crock pot. I have put apples in with the pears and oranges and I always grind up the orange peels and let them carmelize in the conserve. Also have used cranberries in place of cherries and pecans in place of walnuts. I just play around with it. I also used blueberries. My grandkids get in the fridge in search of a jar of it. Last year I gave each of my kids family a jar for christmas and they were back before New Years for another jar. Try it - it is wonderful. Marcia Ramsey Garland TX
