6 ounces semisweet baking chocolate or white baking bars (white chocolate), chopped
2 tablespoons butter or margarine
1/4 cup whipping (heavy) cream
1 tablespoon shortening
1 cup (6 ounces) semisweet or milk chocolate chips or white baking chips
Finely chopped nuts or candy decorations, if desired
  1. Cover cookie sheet with aluminum foil. Melt baking chocolate in heavy 2-quart saucepan over low heat, stirring constantly; remove from heat. Stir in butter until melted; stir in whipping cream. Refrigerate 10 to 15 minutes, stirring frequently, just until thick enough to hold a shape.
  2. Drop mixture by teaspoonfuls onto cookie sheet. Shape into balls. (If mixture is too sticky, refrigerate until firm enough to shape.) Freeze 30 minutes.
  3. Heat shortening and chocolate chips over low heat, stirring constantly, until chocolate is melted and mixture is smooth; remove from heat. Dip truffles, one at a time, into chocolate. Place on aluminum foil-covered cookie sheet. Immediately sprinkle some of the truffles with finely chopped nuts or decorating candies.
  4. Refrigerate truffles about 10 minutes or until coating is set. Drizzle some of the truffles with mixture of 1/4 cup powdered sugar and 1/2 teaspoon milk. Refrigerate just until set. Serve at room temperature. Store in airtight container.

The shortening helps set the chocolate coating so it doesn't melt as easily.

They are very easy to make, just take a little time. Although they were very sweet they were excellent, and I think they were so sweet because of the brands of chocolate chips and baking chocolate I used. However, very yummy and to be proud of. To make them perfect, use a very round teaspoon, overflow it and round the overflowing top so its completely round. You might have to still round it a bit. Deeply coat it in the outer chocolate layering, and put the coating into a bowl so its easier to roll onto and all over the balls. To make swirls on them I didnt use the glaze but just got chocolate on my fingers and drizzled extra on top in swirls since there was a little extra. You will have to use your hands to dip it in the chocolate, a spoon won't work very well. Worth making again. They are good with white baking chocolate so the center is white chocolate, and milk chocolate chips so the outside is milk chocolate. I'm sure they would be good the other way around as well.

well this is really good but the thing is that it defiantly does not make 15, unless of course, they're really small

These truffles are incredibly easy, quick and no hassle to make and are a great gift to give (esepcially for Christmas and Valentines)! I've also tried using 4 oz. semi-sweet chocolate and 2 oz. unsweetenend chocolate to give it more of a dark chocolate truffle taste. They come out very smooth and rich. I also like to sprinkle some crushed nuts on top - it makes it look so professional. Great recipe!

I have made this recipe for about 6 years now, and I like to add a little extra whipping cream. It gives them a little more decadence, I usually pour in enough to make it look like nice dark chocolate pudding. I also add nuts, coconut, whatever you can think of to add in, then once they are coated I melt Almond bark and use a fork to drizzle it over the truffles and quickly put what ever is in them on the Almond bark so my family can take their fav!

I''m the 1st to admit that I''m not a cook. I wanted something easy but yet fancy to make for christmas. I started with chocolate dipped things (banana, pretzels etc). Saw this receipt and thought that it was to easy so must not be that great.. I was the talk on christmas day! I used the truffle molds, used different melt color chocolates and made the truffle fillings in flavors (Rasb, straw, almond, mint, cherry). You can only use PURE extract when making the flavors. If you can''t find PURE, use the imitation with peservatives (rasb & Straw I had to use) I made truffles for 4 days but they were well worth it. This receipt is simple but takes alot of time but you will be a hit at the next gathering...

These are wonderful! I had never made candy like this before when I decided to try these. They are fairly easy to make and they turn out just like truffles you would buy. I couldn''t believe how good the consistency of the centers turned out. I used white chocolate for the centers, milk chocolate for the outsides, and I sprinkled toffee bits on top. I''ll be making another batch closer to Christmas as these didn''t last long in the house. I highly recommend these!
