Created at the Manhattan Club in New York City in the early 1870s, this bracing cocktail tastes as up-to-date as the city for which it's named.

Ingredients

Ice cubes or crushed ice
1/4
cup whiskey (2 oz)

tablespoon sweet vermouth (1/2 oz)
1/8
teaspoon aromatic bitters
1
maraschino cherry with stem

Directions

  • 1 In martini shaker with ice, shake whiskey, vermouth and bitters until blended. Pour into chilled martini glass, straining out ice. Garnish with cherry.

Expert Tips

To make a dry Manhattan, replace the sweet vermouth with dry vermouth.

The recipe can easily be doubled or tripled.
