1
cup butter or margarine, softened
1
cup packed brown sugar
1
teaspoon vanilla
1
egg yolk
2
cups Gold Medal® all-purpose flour
1/4
teaspoon salt
2/3
cup milk chocolate chips
1/2
cup chopped nuts, if desired
  • 1 Heat oven to 350°F. Spray 13x9-inch pan with cooking spray. In large bowl, mix butter, brown sugar, vanilla and egg yolk. Stir in flour and salt. Press in pan.
  • 2 Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until very light brown (crust will be soft). Immediately sprinkle chocolate chips on hot crust. Let stand about 5 minutes or until chocolate is soft; spread evenly. Sprinkle with nuts.
  • 3 Cool 30 minutes in pan on cooling rack. For bars, cut into 8 rows by 4 rows.

Expert Tips

Three bars (1.55 oz each) milk chocolate candy, broken into small pieces, can be substituted for the milk chocolate chips. For easiest cutting, cut the bars while they're still warm.

May I give you a hint? DO NOT OVER BAKE. You must take the pan out when the bars are just set and a somewhat light color...not golden brown. They turned out just melt in your mouth good, as this is a brown sugar shortbread kind of recipe. They are also very delicate so be careful. They should not be hard or dry like cardboard whatsoever. Another hint: cut bars while they are still hot (they cut better). I used a straight rubber spatula to cut them. This is a wonderful recipe and makes a great Christmas gift for someone with a sweet tooth!

For all of you complaining it doesnt taste like 'toffee'. This recipe is based on a very old recipe exactly like this that was called Toffee Bars long before the candy bar you are probably referring to. The base is a classic shortbread type dough/recipe.It is SUPPOSED to be on the "crumbly" side. It used to be that desserts flavored with or used larger amounts of brown sugar was called Toffee or Butterscotch. That is referring to what it originally was. Not the butterscotch/toffee flavor you are thinking of. I am willing to bet you thought it would taste like a Heath bar.

The crust was extremely hard, it was almost impossible to cut into squares. Tastes ok though.
